not sure if this is a problem or not, but it doesn't seem right. the gearshift panel, i.e. the bit which tells you what gear you're in, either side of the gearstick, gets really hot, to the point where it is too hot to touch for more than a few seconds. the gearstick itself is warm but not hot. is this common/normal? if not, what could be causing it? btw its a '96 D1 3.9 V8 auto. any ideas...?

or it could be a your car using the handbrake cable as an earth lead due to a bad earth or broken earth strap. I had to completely rebuild an D1's wiring harness after it caughtfire and melted due to some prick of a mechanic not replacing the earth lead after replacing the clutch.

thanks for re-assuring me  what would i look for and where

look under the car and check all the earth straps are secure and not corroded. Auto's int my thing but I'm pretty sure there'll be a strap fron box to chassis. like wise engine to chassis and battery to chassis (obviously)

ok thanks, i'll have a look tomorrow - if its stopped raining!!

Thought I'd drag this one back up as I've noticed the same problem on mine now, re; uber hot at the base of the gear stick to the point of not being able to touch it.

1st noticed it last weekend which led me to question what I'd done to it recently which could of affected it.
The answer? I fitted the winch... The winch completely obscures the auto box oil cooler, so now I'm looking at mounting it higher or relocating it. Maybe.

Has anybody uprated or relocated their auto box oil cooler? Ideas/suggestions appreciated. :biggrin1:

If the indicator lamps are too high a wattage, and they are not changed they will dis-colour and burn the scrolling plastic tape that moves with the gear lever to show what gear is engaged.
