All the stuff on here is relevant but the main thing to check is the chassis around where the fuel tank sits. They seem to blow open along the bottom and it can be a big job to sort. I have seen 04 plate cars that are knackered.

I have spent half my life it seems chasing leaks in the various Defenders I have had over the years. I don't think you ever get them completely watertight; I have had the leak that pours water on your right knee as soon as you turn !

I had a webasto diesel fuelled cab heater in my defender and it was awesome. It was just like having a domestic fan heater in the cab. The disco though was warm as toast last year.

Yeah I think you would need a friendly person with the computer to tell the car its fitted.

I have found it makes sod all difference to performance. Nor did the replacement centre pipe though it makes it sound loads better. The remap on the other hand.....

I recovered mine using normal spray adhesive and a material I got from ebay. Learnt my lesson when it all started sagging after a month. Re did it with high temp spray glue and it lasted fine.

Not sure about the legality but I think some insurance companies will refuse to cover you. The rest will just pull down your pants and spank you for extra money.

Have you considered putting more air in the tyres? Or park on the pavement and get in from the road? Flatter shoes?

Could you not buy the material and not get some wrapping place to do it for free seeing as its for charity? Maybe for some advertising on the vehicle or a shot in the local paper?

From experience of these things Trading Standards can call the dealer but to be honest are pretty toothless and if you want to claim from the dealer (not worth it in your case) its down to you. Personally I think you will get more annoyed and hassled then its worth if you can fix it for £12 and...

Cheers gents you were right. It cruised at 70 all the way, apart from the many contraflows of course, and strayed to 75-80 where conditions allowed. A great sized boot, raised driving position big comfy seats remind me why I love it. only fault was the drivers door stay has come undone a little...

Having done a bit more digging now I'm back from holiday I think it is not exactly unknown! I find myself sliding into the driver seat via a barely open door just to avoid the loud noise!
