Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

Update on progress. I feel that we are getting somewhere as I now have the chassis clear of all other bits and have been able to flip it to get a good look at the underside. Engine block on the move. Safely stowed onto pallets. Gearbox off. Empty space in the...

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

I recognise every word of this. I described her as a rhino when I first met her.

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

OK. Now that I've established that I have a 1 ton 109; is there anything else I need to know? I've been reading up on chassis differences but apart from the axle heights I can't find anything else different.

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

Lovely job. An older and wiser head has confirmed what I thought. Shocks back in the post and 1 ton 109 shocks ordered.

Gearbox coming off. Is this the sump gasket? My Sump The view from underneath. They even painted the inside.

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

Cleaning up the shocks. Decided on a bit of bling. Starting to clean up the rear axle. Starting to get the gearbox off. Getting some of the tub supports cleaned down and red oxided. bugger. Think I bought the wrong front shocks...

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

Long time no pictures. These pictures are from the last couple of months although I don't feel I've got much done. Cleaning up the manifold. Replacing the dumb irons. What's this called? Propshafts off. Fighting with the...

    S III rebuild chassis advice

Don't want to be too pessamistic but there is an awful lot of the evil brown stuff, you have got a very tight space and it looks like everything needs a bit of cleaning up. I would go with a new chassis, if finances allow. You could then put the chassis in the lockup and add the rest as you...

How much have you spent restoring your Series?

£900 for 1983 109 3 Series. £300 for delivery from Southampton to Suffolk A year of my life £200 for new tools, consumables etc £300 for parts And still only down to chassis, haven't started rebuild yet!

    Stupid shocks question

Thanks for responses. Mine are fine so a quick artist and lick of paint and they can go in the "bits ready to go back on" shed!

    Stupid shocks question

Taken rear axle off and servicing various bits. But the shocks have confused me. Are they supposed to return to the fully extended position after being compressed?

Taken things apart can become addictive

Until I got my old girl I never had the urge to take things apart, degrease them, remove the rust and repaint. However, after 11 months hard labour I do it to everything! Especially when it's a vice that only cost £4 at a car boot!

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

Started to take other bits off the engine block this weekend to reduce the weight and make removing it easier. After advice managed to to turn this bit (is it really called a dog?) Had to jam this cog with a screw driver to stop everything turning. (As you can tell my engineering...

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

Exhaust starting to look much tidier. Just needs finishing and it can go into storage with all the other bits. However, I do feel that I'm approaching the point when I can start putting bits back on!!

Moving this bit to get at this bit.....

    Gearbox still on.

Moving this bit to get at this bit.....

 Now's the time for all you old timers to laugh at me. How do I get the wheel thing off (blue arrow) so I can release the bolt (red arrow) to get the front off the engine????? I am trying to make it as light as possible so we can lift it out but I can't stop it...

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

Then had a go at getting the exhaust off. Got it eventually. Bracket looks a bit ropey with a rusted silencer. So cut out the corroded section. Then rivetted, welded and gun gummed a replacement section on. I know I'm a cheap skate but this whole project...

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

Eventually got both petrol tanks off. Had to cut a hole in the outrigger to get to a rounded nut that wouldn't move. Than filled hole with new plate and refitted the tub bracket. But not before welding tight an internal nut for refitting the fuel tanks when I come to putting...

Giving an old S3 army girl a new lease of life

So long since I've posted anything- forgotten where I'd got to. Nobody warned me that it seemed quite straight forward until you got to the chassis!!! Anyway, shiny bits and home brew! How do you get the shocks off, this nut just keeps spinning and nothing will hold it tight...
