Taken rear axle off and servicing various bits. But the shocks have confused me. Are they supposed to return to the fully extended position after being compressed?

Nah, the springs do the bouncing, the shocks/dampers are more like resistors and just dampen any movement - it's basically a plunger in a tube of oil, no springs to push itself out

They should however move from fully compressed to fully extended by hand - the whole range of movement should be nice and smooth.

If they do return to the fully extended position after being compressed they are gas pressurised shocks.

Thanks for responses. Mine are fine so a quick artist and lick of paint and they can go in the "bits ready to go back on" shed!
Just fitted procomp es3000 which stay in the position you put them which is wierd as they are gas charged , they where replacing Delpi de carbon which where also gas charged and even the knackered one that had lost its oil extended itself!!!!

I've recently put gas (de Carbon) from Paddocks on, they tamed the gb spring parabolics which tended to kick like a mule over speed bumps when empty....I'm still tempted to remove a rear leaf though! Fine when loaded just a bit too hard for a soft-top 88
Depending on the type they will pop back up, some are gas, or gas+oil. Any with oil benefit from being fully compressed and stretched a few times and then kept upright before fitting if they've been on their sides to get bubbles out of the oil...

I get quiet a good ride at the moment on what I believe to be standard set up, but trying to identify the shocks is difficult due to all the crap coated on them.
