I haven't found the dash earth, although I was looking behind the dash so tomorrow I will look for a thin black wire attached to bulkhead on engine side. If anyone has a picture that would help - or describe whereabouts in relation to fuel filter or servo etc. I tested the voltage gauge this...

I can't picture it. I just removed my rear door spare wheel carrier. I don't recall special nuts. Can you take a picture?

Thanks thats good info. Been reading some more tonight so I am planning to find the big earth behind dash and make sure all is well. Then if that doesn't give the answer, take the gauge out of the dash and connect it under the bonnet to the sender, earth and as you suggest, live as well. Just...

For the effort involved the spl complete galv doors look good. Only thing is i would need all 4. I am thinking maybe vinyl wrapping them rather than paint though. Might be cheaper and I dont see a downside.

My 1989 v8 110 hard top says compliant and my 1992 200tdi 110 csw says not subject to lez. I assume both mean I dont have to pay anything. Pretty sure it only applies to diesel commercials so I have dodged nicely with my choice of vehicles.

1992 200tdi defender here. My fuel gauge permanently reads maximum. So does my temp gauge. Battery gauge always reads zero.

Been fiddling with it this evening. 1. Changed temp sender, no different. 2. Touched a wire from gauge earth to neg terminal on battery, no different. While doing the above i noticed the glowplug bulb is working and the relay for the glowplugs clicks so that's all working fine.

What do ou think is causing the leak? Are the seals perishing / split?

Mine is a 1992 defender 200tdi as per original, I was checking the Vin numbers yesterday to confirm. It does sound like my problem is the typical earth issue plus glow plug warning bulb. I would have eased the dash off to attach some wires yesterday but we had some heavy rain in the afternoon.

Yeah that is good to know. Most likely just the usual earth problem or voltage gizmo as originally thought.

Does that have the 2 part doors or single door? Are you looking for window channels or door seals? Can't picture "window seals".

I have a 200tdi 110 station wagon, but it seems to have no glowplug light but instead has what I recognise as a choke light. I am wondering if perhaps someone fitted a new dash, perhaps a 2.5 petrol or V8 dash by mistake. If so, might this explain why the fuel and temp gauges read maximum...

I would just like to add, please make sure you are not in a hurry - especially if the road is uneven, take it easy and anticipate corners and coming to a stop. Is there a headlining that prevents them banging their heads on the metal edge above the side window, as there are sideways forces...

I guess that's the bulkhead mount. Mine is now positioned in the corner of my shed.

What mpg are you getting at the moment? I'm with you on this, less noise is better on a diesel.
