Hello and welcome! Glow plugs aren't a bad starting place, but there's lots more could be causing a hard start when cold. If you can stick diagnostics on it, if it's a plug then it should tell you that, and which one. If it's not a glow plug: 1) how old is the fuel in it / is it used...

+1 Lynall's advice is exactly how I'd proceed, and that looks a normal amount of swarf on a drain plug to me too. Doesn't look chunky which is where I'd start to worry

Lovely looking thing! Some of the leaks can probably be sorted, and the smoking shouldn't be impossible to sort. The steering either is what it is, or it's a bit of a bugger to sort out. Get a thread going in the Defender section for the first job and see where you end up. One job always leads...

Hello and welcome! You might find more specific advice in the Freelander section, but you should have enough flexibility with the drop link, track rod and drive shaft all disconnected. Have you disconnected the damper at the bottom to get the drive shaft out?
