Hi ,not a nuby as such ,however now come across a totally wacki problem ,so have ask for help ,my 2002 td6 was in need off some tlc when i got her ,so lots of work done already ,but this am confused.ok she was never a great starter,so changed glow plugs ,filter, pipes,fuel pump still not happy,so decided to check the current going to the glow plugs ,so armd with tester unplugged one glow plug inserted tester ,turn key nothing ,then noticed when i started the car .after a spurt of easystart,tester still in place it lit up for the amount off time the glow plugs should to start car,does the same after every start .any ideas folks .

Glow plugs aren't a bad starting place, but there's lots more could be causing a hard start when cold.

If you can stick diagnostics on it, if it's a plug then it should tell you that, and which one.

If it's not a glow plug:
1) how old is the fuel in it / is it used regularly? Is the fuel season appropriate?
2) how is the battery? If you can stick a tester on it so much the better, and I'd check it's the right size (Ah and CCA). A slightly under powered battery might do the job to start but will gradually become further from what you need.
3) how is it driven? Good long runs that burn off the ****e, or popping 5 minutes up the road, parked up for an hour, and back?
4) when was it last serviced? Fuel filter as well as oil and air?
5) How does it sound when it's hard starting? Fast or slow crank? Any smoke? If so what colour?

Etc. Try to start at the furthest point from the engine and eliminate all possible causes of hard starting.

And don't forget to show us your Rover ;)

thanks for the info ,none off these apply ,done new glow plugs,new relay.new filter ,pump check,t ,has two new heavy duty batteries,and along with all the other faults ,abs air sus etc etc etc etc ,getting threw them tho ,The thing i,ve found when she does start and i have a test lamp connected to one off the glow plug caps ,she starts no light once started it lights up & goes out after a afew second,i.e the amount off time to heat and start car ,baffled
