I haven't actually taken the old one out yet! Thanks Paul. I did consider buying new "bits" - but I'd probably put it back together wrong and it would just go pop again haha. I may have found one locally though, should be collecting tomorrow :)

I blew up the rear diff in my 300tdi Discovery a couple of weeks ago. I'm in need of a replacement. 10 or 24 spline - makes no difference to me! Matching half shafts would be a bonus. I'm located in Medway - I'd prefer to collect locally. Thanks, Foz

Took the Disco off-roading yesterday. Loads of fun! Until I lost drive to the rear axle... Took it apart tonight and did some testing, appears to be the rear diff! At 4:53 in this video you can hear it go BANG. I then struggle at the top of the hill and you can hear my revs go right up...

Bit dark so i chose the easy option. I forgot I have a phone with a CAMERA. Started car, in gear, out of diff lock, handbrake off and the rear prop spun like a goodun - diff it is then! Thanks for your help, all :)

I just thought of this exact idea - but now there are no half shafts in the axles :(

Ahh that makes sense now. I only had one side jacked up! Tomorrow I'll see if the rear prop spins when it's in gear - if not then i assume transfer box, if it does then diff? Foz

Yes, the wheels did spin whilst it was jacked up

haha you're right it does - i didn't literally cut them to pieces! But they're in no good state to reuse, so i'll need to get some more. One of them had slight notching on the splines.

I did! Wouldn't budge :( Took a lot of cutting and hammering to get that last bolt free! It was just super tight in the half shaft bolt hole - as i say, the (remainder of) bolt came out by hand one the shaft was out.

I removed the half shafts tonight - i ended up cutting them to pieces to get them off - the bolt came out of the hole easy once the half shaft was out. Anyway, both of the half shafts are fine - so either diff or transfer box right? Foz

I did actually manage to get it to loosen a tiny bit, but then it started rounding off - that's why I was hoping the mole grips would help but ultimately they didn't! Anyone have the part number for replacement bolts? :) I'll just carefully go at it with an angle grinder! :D Thanks for the...

I tried hammering the socket on, but it still won't go on properly or flush and that is what ended up rounding off the top of the head. I'm using a 6 point socket. The wheel is off because I tried to get a set of mole grips on, which didn't help. Tried the hammer trick! ill probably end...

Photo should be attached. Socket won't fit behind the gap nicely - I've tried cleaning it out Incase it was full of mud, but the socket still won't fit on properly. Cheers.

Hi guys, I can get 4 out of 5 bolts undone but the last one won't budge - I can't get the socket on deep enough to get a good grip, and it's rounding off the top of the head slightly. The socket went on ok on all of the other bolts - can I get super thin sockets or something? Any suggestions...

Never done it before - is it just those 6 bolts and they slide out??
