Disco 2 Help - How to replace an Alternator

My mistake, it's a 12 point bolt head

Disco 2 Help - How to replace an Alternator

Its the head. The socket size is 14mm, but it's not a hex head, its an 18 spline head.

Disco 2 Help - How to replace an Alternator

Done this twice in the past couple months. - Disconnect the battery (negative first) - Remove viscous fan - Remove the aux belt - Remove the mounting bolts for the fuel cooler (makes the next step ALOT easier), - Take off the plug connector from the back of the alternator - Remove the live feed...

    Disaco 2 Transfer Box

Best bet is speak to someone who wants to do the swap on a Disco too ;) I changed my D2 LT230 to the Defender LT230 because I run 33" tyres. Pulling away is a chore and you need to keep the revs up when changing gear with the standard box, otherwise when you engage the next gear, you have to...

    Disaco 2 Transfer Box

Nah sorry, it's going into a Disco 1 which is going to have an Ashcroft diff fitted to it (the diff ratios are different, so the transfer ratios are fine) Funny how Discovery owners want a Defender box and Defender owners want Disco boxes, haha! :D I take it your is mainly a road Defender...

    Disaco 2 Transfer Box

Hi Guys, Changed the transfer box today for a Defender one to bring the on-road ratio down a bit. However, I noticed when taking the old one out, it has a lump of metal bolted to the box. Does anyone know if this is for harmonic dampening of something in particular? I haven't put it back on...

    Manual discovery 2 lost drive

Just a quick question. With it in 1st gear, lift the clutch up and get someone else to check if either of the propshafts are going round. Obviously make sure the transfer box is in high or low.

    Disco 1 Body lift

Box section is THE way to go. :D Did my D1 with 3.6mm box section and didn't need to put rock sliders on. Tree sliders would have been nice though, however, you could just weld them on the side. ;)

    Disco 1 Body lift

looks like you forgot to undo the steering column, shouldn't be leaning like that. Also, check that the lift pump isn't snagging either.

TD5 low power Air flow fault

Have you given it a standard service? Including the air filter and fuel filter..?

    TD5 Aux Belt Tensioner

Belt is correct. The pulley isn't wobbling when running. However, the crank pulley itself does move slightly when I slacken the belt off? I put a pry bar between the pulley and the thing on the end of the pulley and the pulley does move slightly. Is it meant to or not? (I'm assuming not...

    TD5 Aux Belt Tensioner

Hi Guys, Hopefully someone else can shed some light on this. I'm unsure if the alternator has a clutch pulley (I don't think it does, so this kinda rules this out). I changed the tensioner because the old one was kaput! I put the new one on, started it up and it's shaking backwards and...

Disco 1 Bleeding injector fuel lines

Yeah, keep turning it over until it starts, lol. The mechanical pump for the tank primes the lines, so turning it over and letting the fuel pump turn over will prime them anyway. Or you can use a non-return bulb pump to prime the system.

    Disco2 Rear hub oil leak

Doubt it. Was probably just installed poorly. Was the shaft seal changed at the same time as the hub? If not, you've probably had a worn seal in there from where the bearing was worn and the seal was rubbing.

Disco 2 Hard starting then cutting out.

Mine did exactly the same thing, was randomly hard starting, leave it 5 mins might be ok, might not be ok to start straight away. Going down the road in a gear like 3rd under heavy load, the engine would feel rough and then no response, put the clutch down, take load off, DEAD. Hard start...

    Td5 no power

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet. But have you checked the injector rockers? I know toooo many people that take the injectors out and forget to set the screws on the rockers to the correct setting and you get quite the lack of power, but it still runs.

    Alternator Failures

Changing on the TD5 alternator is easy. Getting the alternator out so you can do it is a pig. Getting the alternator out isn't difficult, getting the plug on the back of it is the bit thats taken me ages on two occasions, undoing the live wire can also be a pain if its been done up too tight...

    Alternator Failures

Really interested in this stuff for the ECU too. I've currently sealed it up with silicone grease, but dirt etc eventually custs it up and your never really sure if its sealed. As for the alternator, I took my old one apart and found the brushes were stuck (and the carbon was all over the...

    Alternator Failures

Hi Guys, I'm curious if anyone knows roughly how long the alternators on the TD5 last (mean-time between failures)? I've managed to blow 2 up now just after an off-roading day. I suspect it's brushes, regulator or diode pack (as a result of dirt or water ingress), but I'm wondering roughly...
