I had this issue on my 3.9 Disco - it could be a vacuum problem (air leak somewhere). Check for any holes, slices etc in the vacuum hoses going to and from the airflow meter. Is the exhaust blowing at all with the catalyst rattling, as I knowing blowing may not help either.

When you disconnect the battery it resets the steering wheel angle sensor, which is required for either the DSC/ABS or both, so doing a full lock to lock tells the system where the end points are and therefore the position of the steering wheel :)

Just took the new battery out to try and charge it - stuck the charger on it and got a 0 amp charge reading - stuck the charger on the old battery that was in it - and got a normal 4 amp charge reading. Seems the new battery is gubbed!!
