sounds to me like the dash is earthing through the hand brake light bulb. The switch (if you have one) will be on the handbrake lever under the rubber boot. Our 86 90 did not have aswitch so the light did nothing till we fitted a 2nd hand lever.

Sounds to me like you need it resync'd. Takes seconds to do either with a syncmate, or by paying a stealer £60 plus call out if you put out a post asking for help from some one with a syncmate you might be lucky and find some one local who will do it for a beer
