Good evening, could anyone suggest a good company for refurbishing the starter motor from the wifes 1994 P38 2.5 DSE in the Manchester area, preferable in the Stockport area more specifically?
I've taken it off the car and bench tested it and found that the bendix gear fires forward but the motor does not actually spin although having said that it did actually spin once but seemed reluctant to do so and spn slowly, in my opinion.
I took it apart to see if anyting was siezed but couldn't find anything suspect although the bushes all seemed worn but in putting it back together the bushes did get slightly damaged in as much as there were some chips taken off the edges whilst I clumsily put it together.
As such I think it needs a rebuild or replacement but I need to keep the costs down as much as possible so maybe done on an exchange basis. I don't want to buy a second hand one because I want to be safe in the knowledge that it has been refurbished with new bushes/contacts and anthing else it needs be it my own or an echange replacement unit.
Cheers,
Andy.

Take the solenoid apart and clean every thing up good and re try. they do get gnked up in there and don't make contact:D

Hi, thanks for the suggestion. Would the bendix gear shoot all the way forward even if the solenoid wasn't firing? Would the self inflicted damage to the bushes cause me any long term problems either?
Once again thanks.
Andy.

Bendix should kick out and turn the starter gear and should whirl quit fast with out load 1-2 second no problem hold it down good cause it will pump on torque, check the brushes on motor

Ribblesdale auto electrics Preston. They refurb for most places in Lancashire area.
Most starters these days are pre engaged. Solenoid sends bendix forwards then contacts terminals to activate starter.

hi mate you can use a starter motor from a bmw e36 325d it is a very slight bit smaller but works just as good... i have done this:D it fits stright on:). i got mine for £40 out the scrap yard:)..best of luck:D

Typical, I sold the starter motor from the 325 tds I stripped a couple of months ago for all of about a tenner!
thats my kind of luck:mad::) have a look on ebay you might find one for a tenner:) theres a bmw brakers 15min away from me so i just went there i was happy to pay £40 as the garage said the cheepest one he could find was a green part for £275:confused: best of luck

Less that £100.00 exchange from the refurb place i mentioned earlier.

Hi B16fun,

where are you? I know a triffic place in Exeter - 2 old boys fully reconned mine including gears for under a ton

I'm in Stockport, just south of Manchester. Ideally I'd like to get the parts to do it myself. I've no real problems in pulling things apart and doing the job myself so even if I can't find someone to do the work locally if anyone knows of a company that can supply the parts to do this then that'd be great too.
Cheers,
Andy.

hi mr wammers :). can i just ask you why would you spend £100 on something that you can buy for as low as a tenner? they do the same job and come off the same engine or am i missing something here :):)

mate its up to you if you want to fix yours:) but why not get one of a bmw 325 disel:confused: it has the same engine and the starter motor dose the same job as the one on the p38... ;)

Exactly. I don;t really want to go down the used route because if I do that and fit it then a couple of days, weeks, months or years later I could find myself in the same situation again. Now if that's a couple of years, not too much of a problem but if it's two months or less I'll be pretty peed off. That's whay I want one that is either my own refurbished, be it by myself or someone else or one that has been refurbed on an exchange basis to keep the costs down.

mate its your money and car so do as you will:) but youed have to go through 10 **** ones for it to cost as much as wot your going to spend you cant be that unlucky and they take 15min to change:eek:...if you do want it refurbed google starter motor rufurb and take your pick you send yours inn and thay will send you one allready done so you wont have to wait. it dont really matter where you get it done. the post is so fast you could have one back in two days..like i said its your money im just letting you know another way that worked for me and might of been of some help to you:) wot ever the weather its not a big deal and im shoure youll be back on the road in no time.. best of luck jamie:D

The ones you find for a tenner at the scrappy aren't refurbished now are they?
no mate thats why its called a scrap yard:rolleyes: but that said if you do buy a duf one they will swap it for a good one and you can test it befor you buy it. so youed have to be a bit silly to buy one that dont work or looks like its had a hard life..but i bet your rich like every one els on here and you would just walk in to range rover and buy a new one and let them fit it aswell...im trying to help the bloke ... do you drive a brand new car or a used one....dose your used car work ok ...well wot makes you think a used starter motor wont i just dont get it:doh::doh:

The OP first asked about refurb places then where he could get the bits to do it himself. You cannot buy the bits to do a proper refurb yourself for £100.00. But you can get a totally rebuilt unit for around £100.00. On an automatic you need a reliable starter motor. If you want to trust one from a scrappy that is up to you. When you run it up how do you know the bendix clutch is not knackered? With the refurb you get a starter that may last ten years, that's a tenner a year. For a tenner you may get one that lasts ten minutes or that runs connected to a battery but when fitted won't turn the engine. Matter of preference i suppose.
