Best mods for long distance motorway drives in a defender?

Some form of cruise control, and set it about 62mph this will be a bit faster than the trucks , but not fast enough to get you into the rat race with all the cars , whose speed variance makes it hard work , and you find that you will keep seeing the same vehicles as they roar off to the back...

    Freelander td4 (2003) starting problem

The td4 engine has a safety feature to protect the HP pump , if the line pressure is not enough it wont start , so you need to plug in and find line pressure . Another possible cause is injector leak off , you are advised to search on freelander part of forum HTSH

Alternative to Disco while saving for Disco 3

In view of the limited towing weight you mention another possibility , and probably tops on reliability is a honda CRV with auto trans 2002 model on has the chain cam engine , boring car but very reliable . They are rated 1600kg IIRC

    300TDi Auto Conversion

Thats a very expensive way of doing it , although you have got lots of nice new bits . I was starting without drivetrain so just dropping a complete discovery set up in was the easiest and cheapest , I also retained the fbw edis system , slightly more power . The change lever is mounted on the...

    110 V8 LT85 'box swap

Discovery V8 r380 and bell housing should fit but gearchange would be wrong (ashcroft do a convsersion) , as would transfer box , this would be cheapest option , the 380 wont bolt up to lt85 bell housing , the lt 85 tunnel wont fit , the seatbase needs modding as transfer front housing fouls...

    Commercial use of a 90

Upto 8 seats would be under taxi /private hire local regs , would involve inspection extra to MOT , years ago (1980's) I had a 109 stage 1 V8 SW on private hire , insurance was high even back then (even as part of fleet) . Seating numbers are decided on width requirements. Local requirements...

    Spread the load MUD/road tyres

If you fit flotation tyres you will just sit on the top and go no where , if its that bad that 4wd with rear chains isnt getting thru then you need to stay off it , even steigers and challengers get stuck if conditions suitable . :(

    diff lock or not

if using chains on snow/ice with a 4x4 its usually advised to fit two sets or if one set to front so that grip at the steering end is maintained to the last . This also applies to where most braking is carried out , so caution is advised on slippery grass as well ;)
