Just an update. Revs are no long jumping. Not much veg left in there now. So veg was the issue. Can't wait to get it all out!

I also have a transfer box leak. The oil is coming out of the rear output, along the bolt. It hasn't been driven yet since fitted and looks like my mate didn't tighten the 30mm nut. Will tightening this nut, as James suggested, just to take up the play, solve the leak or do I need to replace...

you could take the vehicle to a paint specialist, get them to scan it with one of their special colour identifying guns? You don't have to go with them but just get a quote to supply. You could also try a colour matching app but I've never used one and can't imagine they are that great...
