    Noise from the rear

Jack the rear wheels off the ground, hold the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock positions and try rocking the wheel back and forth. If there's any movement, it's likely to be wheel bearing wear. If not, assuming the noise is definitely coming from the rear wheel area, rather than the centre of the car...

    Noise from the rear

Does the noise change when cornering? Failed wheel bearings normally stay the same level turning one way, then go silent when you turn the other as the load on them changes. Your new tyres should be on the rear. The more worn tyres should always go on the front, with the bigger diameter newer...

    Drive clonking

Second that. Just done one of mine. The front mount's the worst offender. A set of 3's about 50 quid, or you can have the original rubbers replaced with poly bushes, which I now wish I'd done. There's a black shield above the prop where it enters the rear diff. If you crawl under there and...

    Alarm problem. Urgent help required.

It's almost certainly going to be an issue with the interior movement detection. The manual suggests that if you lock the doors using the key, then turn the key to the lock position a second time within 1 second, it should deadlock and arm the alarm with interior protection disabled.

Fitting rear seats in 06 Freelander Commercial

Thanks Willie. I think the floor will fit with my existing rear panels, so probably just need the actual floor panel itself and the cage.

    Car wash??

Unfortunately, HG replacement isn't any real firm guarantee that the problem won't return. It seems like 75% of cars suffer the failure, and those that do seem to experience it repeatedly. A few things to make sure of, to minimise the risk: 1) Make sure the car has the remote thermostat...

    Rotating tyres

The larger diameter tyres should always be on the rear to prevent increased load on the VCU, so rotating tyres is probably not a good idea in general. When the fronts run low, move the rears onto the front, then fit the new tyres on the rear.

    Car wash??

The 1.8 engine is notoriously bad for head gasket failures but, that aside, they're not a bad car and far more competent off road than the rusty bulkhead boys make out. Just a shame more people can't see that they're a great entry point into Land Rover ownership and be a bit more supportive...

    newbie,please help.Loss of water

If you bought it from a dealer, it may well be worth taking it back and politely explaining that you consider it was inherently flawed when you bought it, then asking them to do you a better than average trade in deal on it. The Sale of Goods Act still applies to used cars sold by traders...

    newbie,please help.Loss of water

Hi Jay, You don't mention what engine it is, but if it's the 1.8 then, unfortunately, it sounds highly likely to be the head gasket. Unfortunately, even with the "head saver" gasket fitted, the engine is very prone to gasket failure. The engine is just inherently flawed by poor design and...

Help With a Gear Change Problem On My Hippo :S

The symptoms you describe - particularly the reverse gear - would lead me to suspect worn synchromesh. A gearbox oil flush and change might help, but if it's significant wear, gearbox replacement will probably be the only solution in the longer term. Try disengaging 1st, releasing the clutch...

Alarm went off in the middle of the night

...and just to add, be careful that it is definitely a false trigger. I've known cases in the past where thieves have deliberately set the alarm off over and over again until the owner turns the system off, leaving them to steal the car uninterrupted. If it is the sonics, a piece of tape over...

Alarm went off in the middle of the night

Ultrasonic sensitivity tends to drift with age and temperature. Having spent a decade or so fitting alarms in the past, invariably, we'd see more issues of this nature around this time of year and also in spring, when the overnight temperature change is at its highest. Basically, the sensors...

    freelander XEDi 2.0

It's basically a Perkins Prima from what I understand of things and pretty bombproof with good routine maintenance. Cambelt changes are fairly expensive and you have to take the fuel pump off to change 1 glow plug but, that aside, no major issues AFAIK. It's no powerhouse as standard, but...

Bigger profile all-terrain tyres on 16" rims?

I'm now running 215/70/16s Falken Land Air All Terrains - which are more of an HT road/AT mix than a full AT. They're nice and quiet, gave a bit of a lift and, if anything, it seems to handle better than it did on stock size. I get the impression that the speedo is wildly optimistic as standard...

    New air filter, lost power??

If it's a post 99 model, the MAF sensors are prone to get contaminated if the filter is not a pre-oiled type, or if there's excess oil from the filter or any other source in the inlet tract.
