    1998 300 tdi Chassis swap

Been a while since I posted, so thought I'd share some photos of the 1st leg of work on my 110 chassis swap, rebuild, repair and spray job. Myself plus old man did this over the course of 2.5 days; we're waitng on a Richards Chassis to come next week, and we'll pick up another 2 or 3 days work...

    Timing belt toolkit

Looks same as mine n all, great bit of kit - crank nut might be a pain if it's not been done for a while, mind. Alm.

    Bench seats/insurance warning

That settles it. Ill remove the bench seats and have the kids sit in the middle of the tub un-restrained. Problem solved! Alm. On a serious note, theres a shed load of data and "experienced G-shock vs. Death" graphs out there dating back to the 50's and 60's when Col John Stapp had a hard on...

    James's rebuild thread

As a temporary fix, you could use stove seal rope (ceramic braid) to tie it off :) This thread is great James, well done getting the Landy back together and looking proper smart. Looking forward to seeing the paint get finished off. Alm.

    Defender 90 Side Bars suggestions

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but any ideas what paint code that is on that there 'fender? Mine is pretty much the same, but doesn't have a paint code under the bonnet! Alm.

    Range Rover Sport

If I understand correctly, braking under wet weather conditions is all about: Vehicle mass (and distribution thereof), velocity, contact surfaces, i.e. tyres and road. And to a certain degree, the efficiency of brake response and brake balance. The engine or the fact that it is 4WD has no real...

    Cat removal

Removed DPF, replaced with straight through, and passed MOT (Sept '14) with zero advisories. This is on a 300tdi '98 110 CSW. Alm.

Water leaking in from behind dash

I would also check windscreen hinges...! Alm.

No Dash Lights, Still turns over but won't start. 1995 300tdi maybe immobiliser?

PM sent as world-wide distribution of immobiliser bypassing techniques is frowned upon!!! Alm.

    James's rebuild thread

Good time to check connectors for peripherals - some of mine are rotten, and I'm dreading working my up the loom to replace them. Wish I had this sort of access when I was sound proofing! Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing the finished article. Alm.

How to protect our beloved landy from a low life thief

Leave the doors unlocked, without clutchclaw or wheel lock. Just fabricate a locking bar so that you can't move it out of 1st gear low box -with side steps, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to run after it and apprehend the thief. I spent time in Moscow, and there was a spate of ruffians...

Seemingly redundant purple/red and purple/yellow wires

+1 for speaker wires. The two blade connectors should be different sizes (for +ve and -ve) - Cheaper to manufacture and install the same loom for all 'fenders than to use some with and without the optional extras... Alm

    James's rebuild thread

Lining with ally-foam-ally composite panels works pretty well, but it isn't cheap. Could just rivet some conveyor belt rubber to the inside of the wheel arches/boxes with some surplus so it hangs and isn't coupled. Obvious problems if you plan on going off-road. Best to make it de-mountable...

Changed the storage setup in my 90 today :)

Very nice job, intend to do something similar to the 110 for sleeping on. Thanks for the inspiration. Alm.

    James's rebuild thread

Sounds like it's a 1.5mm fine pitch, so search for M16x1.5 nuts. Aerotights will be a good option here if you can get em in that spec -just don't reuse them, what with the plastic deformation and all that!!! The alternative is that it is a 5/8 thread with either 11 or 18 TPI - but if it's a new...

    James's rebuild thread

A good source is westfieldFasteners.co.uk or a2stainless.co.uk A quick and sometimes cheaper source on ebay is aboltfromtheblue (ebay shop) but I've had some "interesting" shaped bolt come from them, e.g: If you want technical info on threads, have a look here: (Maryland Metrics). Also...

New Courtesy Lights & Headlining Renewal

An update: I warmed up my primer, paint and clear lacquer in a warm water bath and masked off the bits I didn't want to paint. Applied etch-primer on the aluminium lights: Whilst waiting for the paint to dry, I re-covered the rear headling close-out in a tartan print upholstery-grade...

    Defender 110 as first car

+1 to better visibility, plus dogs like having somewhere to look out of; rattly sliding windows can be annoying but quickly fixed. Some of the CSWs are V5'ed as vans (Private Light Goods - PLG), like mine, despite always being CSW from new. This has meant I can't opt to protect my no-claims...

    Defender 110 as first car

Go for the 110, chances are it will outlive any Corsa. You risk being volunteered as designated driver by your mates! Might be worth considering how much it will cost you in fuel to drive it every day, and road tax. Extra bonus: If you drive your missus' "modern" car at the weekend, it will...
