It seems unlikely that the gbox code is causing your problem. Does it turn over at normal speed once your try and start it when it's warm or does it turn over slowly? I'd say it's pointing at an ignition problem - does it run fine the rest of the time?

I didn't even bother with those when I patched the floor. Just patched it all from the top and left the remnants of the supports as they were. Floor seems solid enough and it past the MOT so I was happy.

The 300's use a throttle position sensor don't they? Could be at fault - I've heard of similiar issues on Camaro's when the TPS is faulty and confusing the ECU over how much fuel to pump.

Mine had that - sounds awful some days but can't even hear it other days! It was a wheel bearing. A few weeks before I had a similiar nasty noise and it was the front prop UJ. Both are easy to diagnose by shaking the suspected component.
