I have a p reg 300 tdi auto.

First thing the tacho only works intermitently. It flutters about and after a whuile will start working. this appears to be getting worse.

I have a haynes manual which shows a electric sensor on the gear box but no mechanical cable. It is likely to be the sensor or speedo housng. Or is there any other routes to check ?????

Secondly and not realy important but i find it strange. I have a second landie at a holiday home that is used for launching boats. Both auto 300 tdi. The gear boxes feel different. on my one it canges gear and then feels like it does a second cahnge. this amkes it feel like it does two changes for each one. the one at the hliday home does not do this. Is this any recognised symptom with the gear boxes.

I've seen some posts on here about the 300 tdi tacho - there's apparently a little black wire on the alternator that does the tach and the connector gets corroded inside or break loose. Look on the alternator for this connector as it sounds like it's normally always the problem.
Not sure about your gearbox issue

hate to be the bearer of bad news but; the only perminent cure for my jumpy tacho was when I changed the alternator - I think this problem was a warning that the rear bearings in my alternator were starting to bind.
