Yeah, the top strip is a folded, (galv'd?) steel affair and is very rigid. With that chopped, the remaining ally panel is very weak. You need something if you're chopping the capping. Personally I'd recommend the original LR bulkhead removal bar.

Bolts are medium carbon steel not mild steel. They may have used low grade bolts (maybe 4.6?)... But really ought to have been 8.8 tensile strength. I very much doubt they'd have been aluminium bolts - almost unheard of in automotive situations. A2 grade stainless fastenings will rust less...

MGF - main bonus points - theyre very thin, cheap, comfortable and being from the Rover family, the seatbelt buckles fit and are on stalks which move with the seats.

May I suggest that before you invest your time designing safety devices that you actually get some struts and look at their travel damping? The ones I have in front of me from a Honda civic take all my body weight to compress (one) yet when released take ~3 seconds to reach full extent...

Gas struts don't tend to shoot up - they're designed for slow movement assist. A simple lock mech to keep it down? I wouldn't worry about them 'springing up' taking your teeth out all of a sudden as with regular springs!

I'm sure I've seen one that uses gas struts to aid with the lift / drop...

Made it from acrylic sheet using a laser cutter. Great tool. Everyone should have one for jobs like this.
