    what a load of bol**ks, a series 1 will do 22 mpg a s2 petrol will do 18mpg a2.6 six pot will do 15mpg a 2.25d will do 20mpg. you may get slightly more or less but this will be near enough. These people that claim nearly twice what the book says just because they have a magic ear get on my tits

    in between the exhaust manifold and the inlet is a hot spot, this can fracture and allow exhaust to leak into the inlet, thie will cause your problem

    sounds like a faulty injector, slacken of each pipe in turn and see if the noise stops, if so then that injector is bad.

    Its not too bad a job, i remove the rad panel compleat with the rad, mark the wires that join in the midle with tape, remove the front cover , replace the chain the same as it came off
