Tuning, tuning, tuning! Each engine is individual and as such and to get the best out of it, tune as an individual not as per the 'book'!

I agree with earlier comments regarding the age of the engine, and bearing that in mind, if there is a afir bit of wear on the moving parts your fuel consumption will be increased, although I have to admit that I have never had one that returned less than 25mpg ... even on the straight 6!

I recently tuned and set up an early 60's Rover 100 P4 for a friend, and he now returns between 30 & 34mpg

Please feel free to come tune mine, nobody I know has been able to get it to give more then 13mpg...! :)

what a load of bol**ks, a series 1 will do 22 mpg a s2 petrol will do 18mpg a2.6 six pot will do 15mpg a 2.25d will do 20mpg. you may get slightly more or less but this will be near enough. These people that claim nearly twice what the book says just because they have a magic ear get on my tits

I'd broadly agree although most 2.25 diesels I have encountered are more like 25-26 than 20. And it would be a damn good six pot getting 15.

Having owned a 6cyl 109 panel van (3 door) back when they were current model ,
1. they will reach about 80/85 mph relatively easy .
2. Happy cruise is 60mph
3. They should not be noisy , exhaust note is loudest sound , depending on tyre fitment
4. 12/15mpg is realistic maybe a bit more on run at constant 55
5. be ocd type on ex valve clearances .
5. fit contactless ign
6. check diaphragm on stromberg (also damper oil)
7. if high mileage have a look at bronze drive gear on dizzy shaft ( they wear concave and then lose drive) esp if oil changes not been done regular .
8. enjoy the loads of lovely torque and smoothness :amen:

Update the diffs for 3.whatevers instead of the 4.somethings.

Drive gently as you have loads of power in hand and you should get around 30mph at tick-over!

I loves my engines, from little 2hp outboards to the big, constant speed stuff on board ships.

The 'books' will only tell you how to set them up, and not how to get the best out of them!!

Ah but changing the diffs from 4.7:1 to 3.54:1 is cheating! And not an option for people with ENV axles or desires for originality ;)
