    living with a series after a disco 1 ?

Once you've done a couple of two hour trips in a series Landy you'll be wishing you had your disco back. I've had discos, defenders and series 109 and 88. The 109 was my daily drive for about 18 months. I'd had enough of the cold, the wet, the noise and the lack of top speed by then, not to...

    Defender mileage

135,000 is nothing for a 200 or 300tdi. Expect to get at least double that if it's looked after. Condition's far more important than mileage or age.

    Poxy Clutch

Had the same experience here. Just had to get it back on the road so settled for a slushy feeling pedal with the intention of sorting it out in a few days. after a few days driving it sorted itself out and has been fine ever since. Dunno how it works, maybe the bit of air in the pipes floats to...

    I think it's confused.

1500 quid for a mongrel with no MOT and possibly a cracked block?

What do you tow with your Landy?

Dragged these pig arks home from Ormskirk to Norht Wales earlier in the year on a day when there were 80mph gusts. Thelwall viaduct was fun in amongst all the wagons. This was a few years ago. And one of the regular scrapyard runs I used to make.

What effect will snorkel tops have?

If you want the least restriction to your air intake get rid of the snorkel.

    Fan Cowl

The cowl's been missing off mine since I've had it. Never had a problem but I can see how there might be if it was working hard at very low speed.

    Over the hill

Very true. We've got a '96 Volvo 850 estate here. Superb 2.5l five cyl engine, leather interior with electric everything, an absolutely great car, paid 500 quid for it. My '92 Defender cost me a bit over two grand to buy about a year ago but I know I could get half as much again for it easy. It...

    Rummble and Vibration

Definitely fix the A frame ball joint and bushes first. It's amazing how much noise will resonate through the whole vehicle if you've got metal to metal with a knackered bush.

    Transmission rattle!!!!

Sounds like the first signs of propshaft U/J failure to me.

    Smaller wheels to reduce hight

When I needed to get mine in I just let the tyres down.

    Pressurising 300TDI

Both the 300tdi's I've owned suffered head gasket failure. The first started off pressurising the header tank while slowly losing coolant despite no obvious leaks. It went on like this for a long time and didn't get any worse. The other one blew spectacularly on the motorway and overheated...

    clutch qs

OK diff lock rules out halfshafts etc looks like you're in for a job. I replaced the clutch on my 110 a few months back after the centre of the plate disintegrated. Have you had any signs of clutch slip? Usually a worn out clutch plate will slip for a while before finally giving up. Another...

Loud bang coming from rear...not prop lash.

    That'd be my vote too.

    clutch qs

Have you checked your half shafts and drive flanges? Put it in diff lock if it will drive then it isn't the clutch.

Changing a Disco's taxation class from 'Limited Use'

That is correct. I know someone who drives a unimog all over the country on red diesel with no MOT requirement taxed as limited use for forestry. He never gets stopped and has been doing it for years but he's really only supposed to be driving within a short distance of his base. I don't think...

    Defender 90 break over angle?

What a pointless thing to know! Are you going to get out and measure an obstacle before you try and drive over it?

    Indicator fault

Pull the plastic shroud off the column and have a look at the switch unit. They are incredibly crude with exposed contacts etc. It might just be needing a bit of metal bending to make a contact. Or a new switch won't break the bank. A lot of indicator faults are caused by the hazard light switch...
