The previous owner (of my 2005 Defender 110) fitted a subwoofer next to the battery.

So he left the cover off the battery compartment under the passenger seat. I bought another cover, but of course with it fitted you cannot hear the speaker....

My question is, is it safe to leave this cover off, or should it be in place (so l have to move the speaker)

Cant think of any problem with leaving the cover off. As long as battery is clamped.

i'd maybe stick something on the battery terms, to stop something touching and shorting them.. like the seat base

its only temporary thing the little piece of metal in the bottom of the battery tray the clamp goes under has lost its fight with rust need to bolt / weld in some replacement tie down point

What a stupid place to put a speaker

yes and no .... real sub bass is omnidirectional so it doesn't really matter where it is placed as long as it is in phase if it was a decent sub even with the cover inplace you could still get a decent sound with the right set up.

although if you go off road and it leakes like mine it won't live long in there.

With a decent enough set up you could tow it behind you in a trailer but that doesn't mean it's sensible :p

yeah but a lot of the wave energy will surely be absorbed by the seat base.

also big subs and speakers are for chavs :D

The speaker works well in that position....as long as the cover is off.

If you fit the metal cover, you can still hear the bass but it's a lot lower. Oh, and the cover vibrates.
