I've got a 200tdi defender with a genuine safari snorkel which has the air ram type top to it. The vehicle does 33+mpg which I'm happy with and would like to keep!

Now I bought a bearmach type snorkel top when I had a discovery, but couldn't be arsed to repaint it so never got round to fitting it. I'm thinking about putting it on the defender now but looking at it, I'm not convinced it will would be as air efficient as the air ram type ones?

This is the type in question:

Dunno really, the one pictured us used by the military, but I prefer the look of ram ones.

Think its just looks. I prefer the look of the one you pictured. You can get cyclone tops that act to spin out particles to slow filter clogging. Only really relevant if your driving through the sahara. I doubt either make much difference to air flow but someone may correct me

ram air one will allow rain to get to air filter. mushroom top won't. air restriction if any equal. personnel choice

I've got one of those, works well as far as I can see, sounds great as well. I still can't see why the slight restriction makes any difference unless you're engine is tuned to the hilt. The waste gate dumps extra air, which shows there is plenty available. Admittedly I just use the standard 0.75 bar boost pressure, but from the gauge the boost bressure is reached as easily as it was before fitting the snorkle.

Had a mushroom top on my (home made) RRC snorkel.. I actually think it went better with than without it!? Made a great whooshing sound as well:D
