Fitted jubilee clips to my rear coils to stop them dislocating every 5mins and took it for a quick blast to test it. So far so good.

My rear coils are bolted to the chassis, with dislocation cones on the axle, they re-locate every time despite sometimes being a long way apart! Mounting them this way means the springs leave the axle in the same plane every time, something that doesn't happen when they're mounted as usual on the axle.

I've been feeling something uneven in the steering lately. I'm pretty sure it is in the upper part of the steering system as the lower part - steering box, ball joints and swivels - all seems fine. Seeing as the MOT is coming up at the end of the month I think I'd better do something about it because someone may feel they need to say something. You don't seem to be able to get the bearings separately, you have to buy the whole thing. Here it is, freshly unwrapped:

Now let's see if we can get the old one out. First hurdle is getting the steering wheel off:

That was a bit stiff. It's bent my steering wheel extractor:

Fortunately the wheel and retaining nut fit the new column, so it looks like I have the right part. After a bit more dismantling it looks like this:

The ignition barrel/steering lock came off fairly easily and I've undone the various bolts and clamps on the engine bay side. Some of the nuts and washers have dropped down inside the maze of pipes and wires but I'll run my little magnet on a stick about the place and see if I can pick them up. I'm just having a cup of coffee and I'll see if I can waggle it out somehow. The hole in the bulkhead looks too small to admit either the bearing housing at the bottom or the bracket at the top, both of which are welded on. More later.

I've done a terrible paint job!!! Terrible colour mistake!!! Will be fixing this tomorrow, its just an undercoat you understand ;)

Had another session today and got the new steering column in and most stuff back together. Looks like you've got to take the pedal box out to get the column out. For those of us with air conditioning and padding n the bulkhead, that's a lot of messing about Here's the new one going in.

There's just enough room to bend the brake master cylinder forward and waggle the servo and pedal box away. So no brake bleeding needed.
Another bit of fiddling about getting wires positioned so I can get the lock barrel back on:

Steering feels better, but still not 100%. I'll replace the universal joints on the steering column as well I think and then it'll all be new and have no excuse for feeling lumpy.

Your options are many and various. In keeping with the latest LR thinking, the number plate shouldn't be fitted on the centre-line of the vehicle, in fact it's absolutely acceptable for it to be off-centre, as seen on the latest Disco 5 Sport:-

Checked my valve clearances, replaced the rocker cover gasket along the way and had fun and games with injector washers oh and flushed some brown crud out of my heater matrix.

Probably not totally legal 'cos it's a smaller than it should be sticker ... but no problem with it being there as it's on a vertical surface facing forwards. Unlike popular opinion which says it should always be at the front of the vehicle ...

There is a rule where it shouldn't be further back than a certain amount, I had mine on the roof rack and moved it to be legal.

Cracking weekend.
Me Out green laning in my hicap,
While the Mrs went out in the S1 for a big drive & on return I find the following
2 front dumb irons rewelded
Rear spring changed as it lists to 1 side(crap spring as other S1 has same fault)
Brakes stripped down, cleaned,rebuilt
& a 180 mile round trip in the sun roof down.
 
Jet washed it yesterday, cleaned a load of crap off the insides, let it dry then Fertanned it to preserve the rust in good order. :) Primer and paint will soon follow.

Swapped a few parts over from my nackered (original 90 box) transfer box to my reasonable one (my old Disco T-box) .. X-eng brake, all the linkages, removed props ready for new UJ's (Not totally necessary, but while they're off ..) and setting up a mudstuff console (bought cheap on here) with a set of six switches a decent fuse box and sundry things ... Soon be time to transfer the transfer boxes ... The nackered t-box has new flanges on it and other bits but I don't think they're worth swapping over as the reasonable t-box seems fine.

Meanwhile, I've also made a couple of pieces to repair the nackered aluminium seat bulkhead back parts, side parts and other parts, jacked the whole thing up and took the wheels off (because) and tomorrow I'll be dismantling the heater box and attempting to fix the bodge I did last time that never really worked!! Started to clean off the seatbox ready for a re-paint. I've ordered a 'Landrover Beige', we'll see .. but it's inside so as long as it's summat like ... :)

Lovely day for it mind, not too hot, and plenty to drink, water mind, I have to go to work in a bit .. ;)
 
That's a tidy front end now with the black ..

It wasn't 'bad' blue, it just wasn't 'right' ... ;)
