removed prop and started to repair my old one which failed a year or so ago. causing vibration.....

Lesson - always use UJs with grease nipples :eek:.
 
Tried to figure out why my bottom rad hose is leaking under pressure, seems to have not sealed/clamped down properly with the jubilee so re-seated the hose and replaced the jubilee. Hopefully that fixes it :rolleyes:

Scale build-up ? Pinhole? good luck with the re-seating of it ...
 
I've been up to Nottingham and back this morning and something feels funny in the steering. It is as if it is binding intermittently so parts of the wheel's travel are stiffer than others. It's still perfectly steerable but feels odd. The power steering pump and belt were renewed just before Christmas. I shall have to jack it up and have a good feel for free movement with various bits disconnected. The most expensive thing it could be is the power steering servo/steering box, or it could be a universal joint or even the steering damper. The previous set of swivel bearings had developed a notch in the straight ahead position, but it's four years since I renewed these so it might be time to do it again. Anyway, a bit of judicious decoupling and wobbling and feeling should identify the guilty party.
 
Fitted 20mm tool clips to the underside of the dicky seats to hold the legs and stop 'em bluddi swinging around and making a racket.
Another annoying rattle ticked off the list.. :D
 
Bought the mid cross member from YRM to be delivered to workshop - should be the last bit for a semi serious chassis refurb for the next 10years (maybe......). Might add their galvanised slam panel and struts as a last flourish, they’ve been brilliant with a fair selection of bits last few weeks. Cheers, A
 
Removed front diff flange to replace the oil seal. Bloody thing is grooved :(.

I removed and stripped and cleaned the starter only to find there was nothing wrong with it! I also learned you can spark it with a jump lead from starting motor to battery if your cables are shot!!! ;)
 
I've just been out to have a look at the steering. I can't seem to identify the problem just yet. There is a slight sense that the resistance changes as I turn the wheel, such that there are easy bits and slightly stiffer bits. All the ball joints are OK. The one on the steering drop arm is a little easier to move than i'd like it to be so that will be replaced one day. There's no slack, but it feels as if the spring isn't holding everything together as tight as it could be. No problems with the swivels. No sign of binding on the universal joints on the steering column. I slackened the pinch bolts off and moved them around but to get that section out it looks like you'd have to remove the steering box so I haven't done so. Steering box nice and dry (on the outside) and does not appear to need adjusting. Power steering fluid a little low but not excessively so. There's a little slack on the bush joining the steering damper to the steering rod. Maybe it's an upper steering column bearing. Anyway, I've ascertained it's not going to come apart and kill me anytime soon.

Whilst tinkering I was approached by a man in a Discovery 4 who wanted to buy the Defender off me. Willing to part exchange his Discovery 4, offer cash and all sorts. He was friendly and chatted for quite a while but I kept saying he'd be better off picking something off Ebay or Autotrader, because if I sold it I'd have to secure a good enough price to get another one of similar mileage and condition. And then it would be just a load more work for me to add my accessories to another one. He left me his card so I know who to refer the police to if it goes missing.
