silly question, do I need to do the viscous coupling up tight, given the thread is opposite to engine rotation, surely it will tighten itself up?

I've never had that happen after refitting several. At a guess a shade over 100 over the last 5 years. The fan stops almost immediately on shutdown and the amount of shock from starting is enough that even if it did dislodge a teeeny bit, it'll tighten itself back up again. But I have never experienced a VC spinning itself off. Tighten the bugger, I did that with mine and it unscrewed when it was in full lockup and spun off the barsted thread when I'd stopped the engine...nothing yet! but!! Island! order! arrived!
