Yeah, money no object I'd have the single motor Red Cobra rather than an 8274 .. it's cheaper too!! But then I don't compete ...

seems that people are going that way

especially seeing as gigglepin's race winches are not even using any warn parts anymore that i can see

you pay a lot to upgrade the design flaws in the 8274

i see a lot of race trucks with hornets up front now, it was only so long before someone realised they could sell a brand new better winch for less money that a fully tickled 8274

but i guess the only man that knows is the man that has raced with both...

...and i dont know him.

The GP 80 series is fully custom but still based on the 8274 but they're a grand more than the equivalent Red Winch

I don't know anyone thats switched because theyre such an investment.

Jim was abit smug the other day when a GP won the Red Winch challenge ....

quite a few people are switching back to gp. reds have a bit of a habit of blowing up

Not heard about that TBH but id assume theres good warranty.

Saw a few GP's and 8274's break on the steps at KOV this year though but I think they were soloniod and motor problems mainly which isnt really the winches fault. Massive ping from jims cable when it snapped on the steps. Must have been from tension in the strops as plasma shouldn't have snapped like that.

Other issue with the red is the brake relies on your air supply. Friend of mine has a hornet on front of his truck and his compressor stopped working on a challenge at tixover so he was stuck in a big mud hole no winch and no lockers. Iv got an adventure twin top 8274 on front of my 90 trayback and love it. Bought a deltatek air freespool wide drum for it for about £430 ish

reds blowing up seems to get covered up quite well.

the plasma went with such a ping on the steps because it was dead pulling, he'd lost drive for various reasons that i ended up having to fix through the night (was pit crewing for him). was the last stage of saturday if i remember right.

Yeah he lost the thrust bearing yes ? And couldnt engage into gear. It was a hell of a ping though ive got a video of it somewhere. One of your guys came to us (I was withe the moose buys next door) to see if we had one.

Just watched the video again ... what a lift on the truck before the bang !!

got to give it to the winch set up though, got him alot of the way around that last lap on the first day ... preety impressive

Front lights done, set up and all working :)

Mirrors on just gotta get some wipers and sort out a few buts and shes ready fot MOT :D

Reserching 35" tyres not quite decided what to go for. Boggers would be awesome for mud but not for side slopes and speed

Mudzillas would be good but gotta find them in the right size

Pitbull rockers would be good in mud but not very good at speed

You can't get trepadors in 35" so thats a bugger as they would be my choice

So abit stuck on that atm

Need to buy a few upgrades for my winch from Mr gigglepin and work up the courage to spend 2k with Mr ashcroft next

Daft question time .. (I love the challenge front wings BTW) ... have you used inner wings? If not, how've you mounted 'stuff' like the power steering reservoir etc? Have you used pre-cut after market inners, if so which? Any issues with the setup so far?

Very interested in getting rid of mine 'cos they're pretty holey and likely to fail around the bases and mounts, though they're reasonable near the tops where stuff's mounted.

Yep ive got rid of the inners. Ive made my own bracketry for the accesories and welded to the front wings so the front oil cooler has 2 tabs welded inside the wings and bolted to those plates. The PS resovoir has a plate with a suction hose clamp bolted through and the res sits in that snugly. Just about to put some tabs on to mount the wasger bottle and got to do one for the horn and thats it :)

Having no inner wings makes access to the engine bay really easy ... but it also means mud and rubbish gets thrown everywhere.

Swings and roundabouts. If it was a more road going motor id put them in but im not bothered as its mainly a challenge motor :)
