Sam, well fooking done!!!!! You're the official self recovery god of Landyzone.

Wonder why it failed??? i have never seen that happen.

Hi guys!

Lol, 0.51 genius and self recovery god, I am making progress :D

Absolutely no idea why it failed, new (Britpart) balls fitted 2 years ago ish, first one broke at parkwood after 6 months on a very smooth section, second one broke today again on nothing special, a small sharp rut that I was crossing was obviously just the right amount of shock to split it.

Who knows, maybe it was on its way, impossible to tell!

Definitely carry spares though yes!! One of the reasons mine weighs in at so much is for this exact reason but we'd be buggered without it.

Wish I could have gotten more detailed pics to show the process more but it truly was disgracefully awkward, nuff said!

Oh and dropping a bolt in the mud took us ages to find aswell! :p

Remarkably, myself and a 90 both broke swivels today, clean off, yet everyone says they've never seen it.

The true cause is heavy use and offset rims.

Take my hat off to you! sort of smiling as i have read this, fixing it in all that ****e!!! wow
reminded me when our 2toner threw a track off, upto eyes in ****, but if we hadn't got track back at least we could get home,:)

Well ain't that the thing, britpart could be the answer but let's be brutally honest, does anyone really think there is more than one quality of swivel housing available these days?

I mean, I would have thought that the britpart ones are the ones land rover sell and vice versa, just at different prices!

I don't know.

Would like some brand new old stock chrome balls from 1990, that's for sure!!

so if offset rims could be the cause amongst other possibilities, would having spacers on also be a possible cause to this?

amazing work and i bet there was some shocked people lol..

good work, i need to start a spares box in my car lol

I take my hat off to you mate! I would of just got dragged oug and called the AA lol.
The big offset rims would not help for sure.. probly somthing like double the stress once you add the larger tyre diameter aswell over standard.
As for ****part.... well they make cheap parts as there is a big market for it.. especially in this "recession" so it could easily be made from different materials to oem and less quality controll in the casting process.

Annoyingly the swivel ball is one of the few parts that is not available in HD form, but maybe thats because it is not supposed to be breakable, unless its from Britpart.

I mean, my wheels are -50mm, that 50mm THE WRONG WAY so i am asking for trouble.

Huge amounts of leverage available.

For instance, my brake discs are completely exposed, non on it is encompassed in the rim, and thats with 10" rims, so you can see that they are wide and would potentially be trouble.

Couple that with Britpart balls that i am running and it could be the answer.

Solution?

Carry spares :D

Nice one Sam, as others have said, never seen a swivel break in the field! heard of it mind .. ;)

never heard of one breaking meself, kinda bonus it happened where it did and not at 30mph in one of bradfords finest potholes on the way home!

wonder if britpart would exchange it, or are ya keeping it as a souvenir?

Yeah still thanking my lucky stars that it happenedin a good place!

Also yes I would very much like an exchange, but who to speak to??

So I emailed britpart and received prompt response.

"Hello Sam

Sorry to hear you have had an issue with this part, Can I please have the pictures of the parts, we will need them back for urgent inspection, as we have never in our history have a swivel shear in half, these are oem as per Land Rovers, if you can provide your full address, I will get a courier to collect them, Can you please send me details of your vehicle, as inspection will need to complete a returns form, and the company the parts were purchased from, as much detail will help."

So I emailed back the info and some pics and have left it with them.

Since further inspecting the ball I can see that it has a crack around the lower half of the narrow section, exactly where the previous one broke, so definitely well knackered this one.

Not quite sure how much my wheels are to blame seeing as these parts are probably unbreakable in theory, I'm thinking comp safari etc, how much stress is caused from a 10ft jump etc, I dunno.

Just a shame that they break for me really

Seems like a professional first response to the issue from Britpart. At least they appear to be taking it seriously by arranging a courier rather than a standard "return to your retailer" type of reply

Good advice there too, I think we should all check our balls regularly for cracks or any other abnormalities :mooning::hysterically_laughi
