Might nip out after a brew an start it, but ideally it needs to run for a a half hour or so on a high idle so maybe not tonight :rolleyes:

Desperately thinking of something I could do that's not noisy but might just blow it up an spend some time doodling in my sketch pad with the next hair brained scheme LOLZ
 
Regarding the underseal, I thought about using raptor paint / coating after stripping the old one away. on the foot wells the existing stuff covered some nasty rust buckets and I would love to have something solid and painted on so I don't ever have to worry again. Especially in wheel archs, foot wells and sils. Did anyone try that already?

I have spent a few hours obsessing over this conundrum and I've wracked my brain thinking about this particular problem, wheel arches, foot wells and wheel tubs will take quite a beating in many ways, mud and stones with high impact as well as road spray and de-icing salt present us with a whole new dimension and this is where we hit the wall so to speak.

Of my many musings I have thought that the high impact areas ought to be best prepared and protected.

But here we get into murky waters,
What are we protecting? New panels? Old panels post repair or just old panels in good condition?

Trains of thought for new and old panels,
1) shot blast them back to bare metal, etch prime and use a zinc rich undercoating primer and a good quality top coat and then a high impact resistant paint on top.

2) shot blast, zinc rich primer and then bed liner.

3) shot blast zinc rich primer, top coat and then an under body wax protector.

I've been looking at all the above options and think that you might get away with rigorous sanding/wire wheeling of rusty panels to get rid of old crusty paint and underseal if you don't have access to shot blasting but I think ultimately that unless you are painting the bed liner material onto sand blasted surface or at the very least brand new panels then there is still a real chance of the dreaded tin worm reappearing in short order and under a layer of underseal it simply won't be visible or noticeable until it's too late.

Lots to think about but I think I'm going to steer clear of paints with the exception of the wheel tubs and arches as they are new panels and in good order as well as very easy to clean and observe over time for changes and under body wax the rest of the truck as it should seep into everything and any surface rust should swallow it up too, regular top ups and it should see me out.

Sounds like plan! Blasting will happen tomorrow with dry ice. Good point about stripping to bare metal as I only planned to strip the old wax and stuff.

So, protective paint on the impact areas built on bare metal, new paint and rust treating on the other chassis parts. All finished with underseal and wax where needed. We'll see how the chassis looks like with all the gritty stuff removed.
 
My ham fistedness and general fat finger syndrome often creates more work than I have planned, and this is just one such occasion.

Managed to break the fan shroud and it needs fixed as it's an important part of my low speed engine cooling and intercooling set up.

Both sides of the joint are smothered in epoxy to lock it all in place.

Couple of days in the airing cupboard (at the speed I'm welding this thing up it could be a month :eek:) and ready to fit.
 
Got rained off today so had a jaunt out with the family to show them that I care and love them and want them to enjoy our wonderful countryside, all the way to Alton we went :)

Just so happens, completely by coincidence of course, that Keith Gotts is in Alton ;)

Got me some new bits and bobs as I know there are areas I'd like to get sorted for the MOT such as.

Proper Lemforder steering bar ball joints, very expensive but these will last yonks compared with other blue box brands ;)

The Radius arm bushes are on my list of things to get done as they are in a bit of a state these days and I'd rather get em done sooner rather than later I think.

The on board air components keep turning up and I'm feeling quite positive about getting this thing back on the road :)

Good work. I’ve not much time on my two projects and won’t get anything done during week now. I was losing motivation to be honest until i saw that white one again walking the dog. We need to sort a meetup and Chinese soon too. How far off are you do you think? I’m just itching to get on the mech stuff but know no point rushing! Think other side of body should be far quicker as now know what I’m doing :D
