Smashing weather today :)

Been busy already lads and only paused for a lunch break an run to Halfords.

And its off an painted now :D

More layers ;)

I welded a couple of big nuts on to the main shaft, to assist in turning it.

I was thinking about that, maybe even just a couple of pieces of flat bar, wide enough to get the big adjustable on, you'd have thought they would have come from the factory with something on there really as it was a pain in the hole even on my Range Rover donkey's years ago LOL.

Not done yet but got caught up on something else that has been niggling me so a little behind me schedule but no drama, still chugging away, quick brewski an back out to cut me hands and smother myself in more paint LOLZ

Today was a mixed bag, did somethings but not others and sort of did but didn't get as much done as I had hoped.

Slapped an 80 grit sanding disc on the grinder and flapped the steering bar back to bare metal and cleaned up my hamfistedness from yesterday.

Going to try current crop of Hammerite for a try as I'm told by one of the local fishermen that he has had good results with it and over winter it has been very good so worth a look to see if Akzo listened to users at all.

Popped the old BJs in and set it up on axle stands ready for painting after wiping it down with meths to remove oil and dust.

Wanted to get the side trim back on and used a strip of that caravan mastic tape and some fresh trim pins to get it back on securely.

Thought I had better get a lick of top coat on the floor supports too.

Had to get the mud flap bracket on as I am trying to set up the rear quarter panel and the bottom of the bracket pulls the quarter panel in.

Slight problem here, the fin seal doesn't even touch the quarter panel and is about a half inch off it, hoping it pulls tighter when I fix the quarter panel at the front of the wheel arch at the bottom where it meets the sill,

Managed to smash the courtesy light switch by accident when I was refitting the door so ordered up two new ones from Bearmach to replace both front ones as the passenger side is a bit hit and miss and works when it feels like it lol

The paint was dry on the steering bar so I thought I ought to get that fitted and the new ball joints installed, quick brush with some copper slip to stop them seizing up in the bar again.

Forgot to take the pics but I pulled the carpets and sound deadening mat out of the passenger side and got 3 of the four bolts out of the seat base, the last one rounded off so will need to be cut off, the floor and mats were soaking wet and the floor has started to rust through really badly and I might need to get the box section sill in and the door post welded up and then cut out the floor and remake it out of one single sheet, got all bar one bolt out of the passenger side mud flap bracket too but need help from her indoors to get the last one as I am not blessed with tentacle arms to get a spanner on that last bolt lol.

Busy week coming up and if the weather stays good I might even get a bit done in the evenings too :)

Is this rear passenger footwells that are rotting? That’s a right pain!!
I’m going to try and utilize any eve at home too! I’m working through the premier inn menu a lot at the moment though!

We should have done a paint experiment being the losers we are. Bonda on light rust, leave in garden, Hammerite, corrolless. Leave out in garden and maybe spray salt solution now n then n see which defects first. I need some hydrate or that aqua seal you used. I brushed what I could inside rails but had to do with what I had and paint over with bonda. Loose stuff was off but I do wonder how it actually works or rust. Definitely would have preferred hydrate 80 on it!

I've been playing ahead of time, water based primer on bare metal, super stuff worked as it should, on light rusted stuff as long as it's not pitted then it's fine but forget it on pitted rust, the aqua seal was garbage, it turned the rust pits black but it continued to rust under primer, the Bondarust primer worked on absolutely everything and thus far has not let me down even when left bare without top coat.

For me the best way forward for anyone repairing an old Discovery or Range Rover is Bondarust and carroless top coat.

My stumbly block at the moment is the high impact areas such as foot wells and wheel tubs, I've been researching a ton on this subject and thought about many products and applications, raptor coating, bedlining, stone chip, underseal, bitumen schutz, waxed solvent coating, the mind boggles and the conundrum is one which deserves to be tested but I'm not willing to sacrifice my own vehicle for the test bed LOL

I still need to make a firm decision on my wheel tubs and arches but I will deal with that when I get to them in a few weeks time.

Yu can always call in a favour..:)

I’m the same with hanging that door. Weighs a tonne haha. I’m still going abs liners as per that gordini project. Bolt in jobs. They will bolted over coated and waxed tubs. Glad you rate the bonda, seems good doesn’t it. I’ll try out the hydrate 80. Same as fertan but no need to douse area in water. Afterwards

I had a brain fart and thought about fiberglassing then in situ with black resin, would be super tough then.

You have to think your way around these things on these motors don’t you! These arch liners are definitely a requirement. It’s like sandblasting the thing with salt if you drive it on the mway in winter. I can’t believe how much further along my motor feels with a rear cross member lol

It's a great sense of achievement when you get something nailed together and it's all finished, quite pleased with my progress but realistically I'm only 50% done.

I'm still at a loss as to the right course of action with the wheel tubs etc, but I suppose as long as I keep on top of the wax coating annually and do a good job of getting all the panels well prepared and painted up first, so long as it has good paint first then any secondary applications should be added protection and the waxing will sure help.
