Cracking thread, just contemplating starting my work on my disco and there's much on here that will help me

Awesome, get on it my son, you won't regret it, for all the sleepless nights, skinned knuckles, welding burns and bouts of arc eye I love this old thing, as capable as a tratter and gives you so much more comfort, plus hardly anyone wants to try and steal them so it's winning all round  :D

Been on it again this afternoon, fixed the drivers side headlight problem, silly me forgot to refit the earth to the headlight connector when I went on my mammoth cable tidy mission last weekend

I am well chuffed that I have actually managed to find time enough to strip out all that old crappy steel cable and now have the plasma rope installed on the drum and the fairlead has been replaced with the correct hause for the plasma rope :)

Now about to find out if there really is any difference between the QT diff guards on a left hand drive Vs a right hand drive motor

Pics to follow later ;)

I don’t like diff guards. They are a major mud trap and allow the rot to eat through the diff pan in next to no time. I prefer the HD diff pans.

I have looked at the Gwyn Lewis ones and nearly ordered two of the DIY tacked together ones but they are a heck of a "make work" project in the short term, the QT guards especially the rear also double as a skid and help avoid the diff getting hung up or at least reduces the drag of the bottom of the pumpkin in deep ruts.

Jury is still out as I have a few trips planned and I don't really want it laid up in bits while I faff around lol

Get a spare axle casing? Cheap enough, rebuild it, then swap?

@The Mad Hat Man I said exactly the same to @dieseldog69 the other day. I don' know why I haven't taken in off yet. Wet mud sat in there waiting to eat the casing.

Hope your right @dieseldog69 I got my first weld spark down the back of the neck yesterday lol my car work fleece looks like a hash smokers :D
Get a leather welding jacket and gloves. Worth their weight in gold :). Look at eBay item 221913649304

:D:D:D:D

That really made me LOL funny as :D:D:D

I highly recommend wearing the same clothes for welding and reserve them for the task, MHM offered me a leather apron (ooo er ) but I declined him the sneaky photoshop opportunity lol

Will check and double check the casings are the same LHD and RHD, pretty sure they are and that it is only the swivel housings that changed but that might be the easiest option as I would really like to get the radius arm bushes and PH rod bushes replaced at some point too, axle swapping might prove the perfect timing if I manage to get a set of narrow radius arms to get refurbed ready for the swap.

Gonna get some flame retardant overalls. I have so many t shirts getting destryed at the moment. Just cheap ones but still stupid when I could wear overalls. Did get some gauntlets after I hacked my finger and they are good. Just cheap screfix job too

Got the rope spooled on.

QT front diff guard for a RHD Rover axle.

And the problem with fitting it on the LHD Discovery.

DSC00163.JPG

Panhard rod is too close to the diff pan, clearance is very tight and I think I know why there is a different one listed for the LHD vehicles.

Would have to chop the top off it and weld in some way of fixing it to the diff housing.

Might be able to keep the QT but I'm guessing it would be only just :(

I found an image of a proper LHD QT diff guard, quite a difference!

Cut and reweld?
I was more thinking of cutting the lettering out and laying it over the lower portion and welding it on and then remaking the part they were removed from as putting them lower only reduces strength in the area likely to bebe hardest hit by a rock
