No. Thermostat is old school. The viscous fan might be shot though. Or the rad clogged up.
Well I'm going to drain the rad today, see what crap comes out, check the map sensor pipe is connected and give the air temperature sensor a clean and see if it solves the problem.

I think the viscous fan is ok as it comes on when I turn the engine on but I don't hear it kicking in when the engine starts to overheat

I will even check the egr housing and clean out any crud, being a turbo diesel engine it could be full of sooty deposits which could inhibit the power.

A 97 dozzel does not have egr that came in later along with the plastic inlet manifold, the viscous fan will roar like a tank when it is working, get it all up to temp and try and stop it with a rolled up news paper the Sun is only fit for this:p is it stops the fan its goosed if you get confetti all is well

Put the car in a situation where it'll overheat to a degree then pull over and pop the bonnet if the fan isn't pulling air like it should its papped. My fan will race every time it's started and even when it's been started and running. Then it'll settle down until needed. If the guage gets near the top and you can stop the fan with a news paper as our mate says, it's pooped!!

Top of the cam cover has a grill that clogs up and the breather filter on the side.
