As the pics show, the lights come up, then left with the usual contenders when I comes to ignition, bit no engine noises. I am trying to get the starter relay out for inspection (behind battery) but she's reluctant to come free. Can I link it in situ to get it started??
You need a DVM or test lamp to do some checking, with the key turned to start do you have 12 volts at the starter relay? If you do and the earths are good, then the starter motor is suspect. If you do not, then there are many possibilities. The ignition switch is known to fail, other possibilities are the immobiliser or as you say the relay.
 
All items are earthed locally to the body. The positive side as you say are switched either by relays or MOSFETS.
There should be an earth strap from engine to body and just one from the battery to body.

I've found the earth strap, which is in decent condition apart from the 13mm nut holding it on to the body (looks like someone has been here before and rounded the nut) I've cleaned her as best I could in place which obviously isn't ideal.
I will turn my attention to the relay as now I've got decent voltage from the battery I might be able to link it to trick it into starting.

Yeah, I've got a tester here fortunately. So will check now....
 
So 12vdc on the back 3 but nothing on the front.
I have checked whilst turning the key. Do faulty relay it is~right?
12vdc on the back 3 of what? You can pop the cover off the relay and check the contact, you can also substitute it with another one of the same colour from another position.

I'd have to look at RAVE to identify that relay.

Your wisdom surpasses knowledge itself. Turns out it was the wiper relay :oops: I replaced it and the wiper work oddly enough. o_O

So...the location of the starter relay is now up for debate hahahaha.
I have got both sets of keys in case something silly with immobiliser.
Gonna check the ignition switch itself. it turns as normal but gonna check it's sending signal.

....Checked the switch and immobiliser, both ok.
.....Checked the relay...well I spent ages looking for it then failing and ended up just giving the starter motor a few swift blows until finally submitting to the AA.
Low loaded me whilst in my car~social distancing lol

Ok, so here is a catch up!
I took the starter motor off (that short sentence was 3 days struggling to get the top bolt off~found some handy advice on another post which worked), replaced the the copper contacts and plunger for new, tested on a bench and replaced, which worked! For a little while.
So I confidently jumped in, as it's been a good week driving, and...no go, first attempt starter clicks rapidly, then next attempt one click, and then finally no clicks.
So, I whip off the starter motor, strip it down amd check it over, clean it up again, test on the bench, works no problem at all. Pop it back on....same thing, few clicks, one click, nothing. I charged my battery for good measure (14v)
I put the DVM to work, putting it on the small wire and turning it over~0.5v. So I assume the starter relay? But where it is is a mystery. Not behind battery, I'm not sure about the ecu fuse box in engine bay, I can't find any info as to what the relays are, but I did bell the small wire to a few fuses in there (all fuses ok) see picture.
I am considering doing the old screwdriver across the two terminals job on the starter motor to get her to start, but it wouldn't solve the problem.

Any ideas?!

Check the earth continuity between the starter to engine, starter to châssis, châssis to battery. The shorting of the terminals on the starter you can try but bloody carefully!!! ;)

Get your dvm on the trigger wire at the starter and ask someone to turn the key.
Check for 12v at the trigger,
Then check for 12v at the large wire from the battery and then check the earth continuity between the starter to engine, starter to châssis, châssis to battery. The shorting of the terminals on the starter you can try but bloody carefully!!! ;)
If your not sure about the earth then use a jump lead from the - post on the battery to the engine.
