Im heading for a fine then as im a recovery truck driver - when waiting for jobs i leave my truck running to keep warm - wasent aware it was a crime !!!!

It isn't .. it's only a problem when you leave it running and leave the vehicle .. If you're in it, so long as you're sober, it's all good .. :)

Perhaps you can post a link on that Paul, i've searched web although very quickly and it's easy to find the ruling on leaving the engine running but an unattended vehicle nothing.

Recovery vehicle drivers leave their engine running when working at the rear they have to, if there was a rule that you must not leave the cab what would happen poss they would have to double up.

Here we go... the last paragraph at the bottom of the page suggests that it may be exceptable to leave the engine idling to defrost or to cool down the vehicle, there's no mention that I can see saying that the vehicle must not be unattened.
For those interested then the Road Traffic Act for 2003 is the place to go for more info.
Idling Vehicles
im a bit late to this but ,thats the answer by the look of it ,defrosting is good reason :praise:

"Norfolk Police have warned drivers in the area that starting the engine to defrost a car and leaving the vehicle unattended is a criminal offence - known as quitting - and could make it easy for car thieves.

The police force issued a statement warning drivers of this problem following the theft of a vehicle in Sprowston yesterday (December 16th) morning at approximately 07:20 GMT."

Can't find a definitive government link, but the above is at ..

"The offence is against S42 of the RTA 1988.
This section deals with Construction & Use offences.
Quitting is dealt with by Regulation 107(1) of The Road Vehicles (Constriction and Use) Regulation 1986 (SI 1986/1078 )
Unfortunately the OPSI website only goes back as far as 1987 on-line so I can't link it."

Unless you live on a main road i think you'll be OK. Copper who fined someone was obviously a jobsworth ****.

Quitting.. Well done & thanks Paul.
Lots on 'Quitting' on the www I see it only applies to the the public highway and not applicable to emergency vehicles and certain other vehicles are also exempt ie. drain cleaning. recovery vehicles.

Move to a crime-free area! Up here it is not unusual for people to pop out of the pub and start their cars before returning to drink their last pint. Sup up, belch...and the car is good to go! (I believe:rolleyes:)
