so what about the jap one... £1800 year mot from mates garage, like a proper mate, not a car selling garage
no rust, rear arches looked ok, engine ok, interior a bit shappy, brown seats etc, saggy headlining,no mon cons really, steel wheels, only last 3 mots history,impoted 2000, fading/paint issue on the roof and bonnet..asking 1800
i started out a few weeks ago thinking might get a 4x4 for a winter toy, 1k-1500
now im at 2k,and having all this
there has to be comprimise ? surely , where do you find it ??? and how can people be certian that one there is a total crapper ???? ..im wanting to know how,and taken pon board the advice, to find out tomorrow..
i very well may look it over more in depth, check the things listed above,and rear floor etc and think they were right,lets ge out of here ...but what if the rear floor looks nice ???? what if i dont see much rust isse anywhere else ?/??? thats what im trying to establish

as said by previous members be very careful buddy the disco's have a bad habit of hiding their rust, i bought mine approx 3 years ago now and still finding rust in places but its been passing an mot every year. an mot means it was good and working on the day of the test not all year round buddy and not everything is covered in the mot, alot of grey area's in the mot test which dealers seem to find and take advantage of to save them some money. and at the end of the day looks and fancy gadgets ar'nt always a good thing. and looking at your profile being down in portsmouth,there is the salt air to consider. my neighbour bought a 200tdi for the engine from down near the coast and there was more rust than there was body panels left i think it was only the mud holding it together. which is why i think alot of the other members are trying to warn you off this one. if that amount of rust is visible god only knows what lurks beneath all those plastic panels mate.

il have a proper look through the history tomorrow and see where its lived most of its life, weather local or a bit more in land !!
this has definatly give me a lot to think about and a lot more to look for tomorrow, so im thankful for that !!! and least the cash is in my pocket not his !!!!! he cant really argue can he if its all checked over further by me and my mate n we do things like lift that rear carpet up n go ..look st the state of that !!! ...but it might be nice

or he may not, hes just completed a restoration on an old bmw 325 sport...bodykit hides rust issues, a car that suffers a lot, and very much like the disc thing are hidden...he knows all this, il be relying on him tomorrow
but lads...is there a chance it can be a nice one that arch aside and actualy turn out a good purchase ???

I feel this thread has run it's course.
You seem determined to buy it despite what you have read from those that actually OWN and have EXPERIENCE with LRs.
If I were you I'd just cough up and buy it but make sure the seller will throw some humble pie in for free.

well without going on at ya like a nagging wife we've given you the advice and stuff to look for before parting with your hard earned reddies, so as long as you trust your mates opinion then go for it. but please make sure you are 100% happy with it as you have been warned. but fingers crossed mate you have found a good un and hope to see some more piccys of your new toy very soon. good luck

i want it yes and want one and its now snowing heavily outside and my bmw will be grounded, which doesnt help !!!...but only if nice, if not or like mentioned a polished turd, i absoloutly do not want it, but no pics of the engine,under,interior, no one knows what the boot floor is like,and just them pics of the arch,and other side being ok....i admit im a little bit bemused at all the negativity ??
that jap import ones sat there, as will be more that turn up, im just findign it a little but crazy how it seems to have been totaly dismissed the way it has with such little info and pics ?????
and i appriciate this and the advice of course, it could well mean me returning tomorow with no disco but a pocket full of cash and a thank god to those lads on there and me saying so, of course i appriciate that !!!

by the sound of things the seller is a mechanic who owns a garage.
If I was in your situation (a couple of years ago before going through the joys of welding the disco back together) I would say to the fella that you are very interested in the motor and will buy for 100% asking price IF he shows you every item on your prepared 'rust check list'.
It's not a big job, takes a Phillips and and a torch and less than 20mins - especially if he's a mechanic

thanks mate...i appriciate that, thats all i darly hope for, its nice...the rust isnt major , he looks under and arround it and says yes looks good to me
any,and i mean any hint of a cowboy rush repair on that arch, im out of there
also as it the boot if its bad

me and my mate both love e30 bmws...rust buckets they can be and endless probs, he knows 10 fold i do,and the 325i sports hide a lot of rust..i have faith in him to see me ok, and IF he deems it a good buy, il buy it, and take it to my mates mot station for a test on friday, but i may well walk away

well the garage is a family run garage,im not sure if he owns 100% both places, but theres a car sales businesss,and a garage/mot place next door, sort of linked, hes the big boss man
google "hayling garage" you can see the car on there and others for sale , its been there years, cple of ppl who ive spoken too, rang a matge in hayling and stuff..said yeah its a nice garage and heard good things n seen the disco there today out front looked nice
so...can you please do me that check list ?? is it the same as posted a cple pages back ???
il explain to the fella look mate...were checking it over,this is my mate...just want to avoid any dodgy issues and give it a proper look for rust issues, as i know nothing about cars really..he does

anything is fixable with a welder and even if the boot floor is completely shot it can be fixed. boot floors are cheap enough to buy

i paid £800 for mine and its never let me down let but all that being said as someone said in a previous post look after the disco and it will look after you.

At the end of the day, £2k is a lot of money but (hopefully) it's not going to ruin your life if you paid a bit over the odds for a car, or it has a few more issues than you anticipated.
I've been in the same situation, I wanted a Disco, I didn't have the time or inclination to travel hundreds of miles to look at cars so I looked at what was the spec I wanted, at a price I could afford, and was local-ish.
Yes, I bought from a dealer. Yes, I probably paid more than I would have done privately or if I'd been prepared to drive to Wales / Scotland / Cornwall etc to look at similar cars for less money.
BUT, I got a car I like, when I wanted it, and I've been enjoying driving it ever since.
In the grand scheme of things - get what makes you happy and sod what anyone else thinks

whats it been like for rust mate ? what was it n how much etc ???
ive llooked ok ebay and ph etc..have ppl seen the money thats they go for latley ???
no one seems to acknowlege it actualy looks nice ??? its got a mint interior and no signs of leaks that i found, all mod cons n top of the range extras, all working,full service history, looks good underneath, no bodywork issues, engibe bay looks nice,engine runs lovely , it drives smooth, original stereo and handbook etc, nice alloys and tyres , yet im baffled it gets dismissed as a total ****ter and waste of money via the pics of that arch which is a common fault , no one seems to say it sounds like its been looked after for the 13 years and a cple of rust issues are to be expected ??? and just check for this and that,and if the boot floors good etc..you have a nice sounding disco ??? il be honest i was hoping for that, or at least a bit of a response like that and a bit of posetivity
