Morning Gents,

Think I have a problem with the front Diff on my classic.

I've sourced one from a friend who is sure the 10 spline diff and front axle of an older classic will fit, to be honest I wouldn't doubt him but was wondering if anyone on here can clarify?

I take it it's fairly easy to remove from the axle?

The replacement diff and axle are removed and sitting in a pallet. I'm not wanting the axle though.

My mechanical knowledge around diffs is pish to be honest but I was going to send the boy that works for me to strip it as they couldn't lift the axle yesterday.

Cheers for any help

Gav

any axle from a rrc will fit any other ,but calipers vary and abs ,alll 10 spline diffs will fit but not replace 24 spline,to change a diff undo 2 x 7x bolt ball to axle and pull wheel station away from axle a couple of inches reaseal with rtv silicone

I might be wrong but I heard there were early imperial 10 spliners that wernt the same as the later ones?

what year is yours???only soft dash had 24 spline..so odds on yours is 10 spline anyway..

to fit assuming you have 10 spline...

remove prop.(4 of 9/16 nuts bolts)
unbolt diff from axle (lots of 9/16 nuts)..removing oil first of course
undo the 6 (up to 86 i think)or 7 (after 86) swivel hub bolts from axle, pull hubs and swivels clear from axle enough to pull half shafts from diff.
prise out diff from axle housing..

fitting is reverse of above, though doing this way (quick) will mean you need to use a good quailty sealent between hub and axle case as you cant replace silly paper gasket as half shafts dont allow..(can cut it and install that way if wanted)

diff is haevy, dont drop it on head, dont get fingers in way installing..

ok..you have a soft dash..you would..

then you need to replace half shafts as well..dont bother..you cant..well you can(i have 24 splin diffs (lsd) and shafts in a 72 rrc,)but it is easier to replace complete axle..(as complete axle strip down is required)

now if you do this you must be sure new axle has abs etc fitted..(as stated any axle will fit any rrc, bolts in sam place etc)

to be honest you can get a 24 spliner diff for £10-40 on ebay..go get one!!300tdi disco is 24 spline i think..much easier job then..(ASSUMING rest of your axle is good)

Thanks for all the advice gents.

So it's actually a 24 spline diff I need, glad I asked now!

I think eBay is going to be the best shout if it's an easy fix, saves me worrying about axels which might not have ABS.

So any 24 spline diff for a landrover/discovery will do? Sorry I'm not technical or mechanical.

yes..24spline from late rrc,or 300 tdi/v8 disco..they are the same..BUT ask seller if 24 spline..fronts and rears are interchangable..

you can make 10 spline diff fit, but you need shafts as well, and they must come from abs equiped axle,or you lose abs!

dependent upon what year rrc's actually changes to 24 spline,i have a 92 am breaking.

my info about changeover date is from ashcroft and experience when trying to buy one!but am possibly wrong..wouuldn't be first time as mrs likes to point out!

its more than shafts as hubs and drive members are narrower to allow more choice in aliminum wheels disco defender front 24 spline diffs are the same so is def rear 90 but rear disco will need 3 bolt flange swapping

Yeh just read on an eBay listing the rear is 3 bolt.

I've got a gearbox specialist I use regularly, contemplating giving him the diff to rebuild since it sounds a bit hard to make sure I get the right part. Mind you it only sounds a headache if I'm swapping the full axel.

He's good but ****ing expensive though.

I take it once the diffs off its easy enough to count the splines?

The garage are convinced it's the diff, I take it if the diff has **** itself this would justify why the cars not moving when drive or reverse are selected?

I know that's a stupid question but I need to ask haha.

Cheers guys

Saving me the pain of Xfactor

one diff wouldnt lose drive onrrc unless rear t/box out put shaft splines had gone or rear diff/halfshaft ,3 bolt flange can be swapped with 4 bolt flange with spacer out of old diff if old diff has fine splined pinion

Thanks James, this is about 10 levels too advanced for me, the spacers for the diff I understand but see if the front diff has basically collapsed ('**** itself' is our technical term) would that stop any drive going to any wheels or am I getting confused with a transfer box here? If there's even one on the front haha

Sorry mate it's just sunk in.

The other possible faults you mentioned, would they all be cured by replacing the diff?

drive through viscous coupling is allways transmitted to both axles,it is possible to loose drive through viscous coupling failing and spinning freely but cant remember seeing one usually they seize ,so if you bust front diff you shoulkd still have drive to the rear ,unless rear diff/half shaft or output shaft in transfer box is also bust

oh..welcome to rrc ownership..lol!!

time to read up on diy mechanics,as you get ripped off by local garge etc...its all easy..
