Hi,

Need some advice please for my D2 Td5. Yesterday I had my Uj go on front propshaft & sheared off, with luckily no other damage to underside. No problem I thought, i`ll remove prop & put it in diff lock & should get me home. I had previously fitted another cdl box & lever from another D2 as my 04 landmark didn`t have one fitted & the box went into H & L no problem, so I assumed all worked ok. It wasn`t untill I removed the front propshaft & had no drive in High or low, that I realised all wasn`t working as I thought. So how should go about checking why the difflock isn`t working ?

Thanks,

Dan.

After you fitted it did you ever check it to see if it actually worked? The Diff lock I mean.

I just presumed it did as it went into both high & low. How should I of checked it was fully functioning ? I orignally had a problem with my transfer box so found one with cdl & fitted it.

High and low are of little consequence of the CDL.
I presume on a D2 you would have to fit a new linkage and lever if you didn't previously have a center diff lock.

High and low are just different drive ratios.
CDL locks the centre diff, i.e. the one in the middle of the transfer box, so that both propshafts are locked together.
You action it by moving the lever to the left when both the transfer box and the gearbox are in neutral. (You don't absolutely have to do all this but it is better to if you are unfamiliar with how it works. )
Once done you can then select the ratio and a gear.
In your case, once the lever is moved to the left then your rear prop should be locked to the front one and only be turned by the engine when a ratio and a gear is selected.
Possible problems are that the lever might not move to the left as the mechanism at the top of the box can get jammed if not used fairly often.
It could move over but not action the CDL if the connection between the lever and the mech in the top of the box are not connected.
Or the diff lock could be missing entirely from within the transfer box. Normally in this case it isn't possible to move the lever laterally
So, put the lever over to the left, move the same lever either fully to the front or the back, select any gear and the vehicle should move with the front flange turning at the same rate as the rear one.
If this doesn't happen check all linkages from the base of the lever to the one on the cdl lever on top of the box, that they are all connected and all working.
Best of luck.

They come in three flavours:
bits in the box but no linkage.
no bits in the box and no linkage
bits in the box and a linkage.

All good fun!!!;););)

Yes, typical nonsense from Land Rover.
My son has factory fitted CDL on his.
Lucky him.
I have heard that the later ones, the original buyer could specify one.
The earlier ones had the bits but no connection as they felt the mechanics working on them would like them to be there but the drivers should rely on traction control. (Mine is one of those.)
And the middle ones didn't even have the bits inside, cost cutting maybe.
It ain't too difficult to rig control from the cab if you have one like mine, I have yet to be assed to bother.

Thank you. Luckily I have a spare vehicle to use when I get time to look into it. I don’t think i’ll have time this weekend and I’m waiting on a new prop to arrive as that got too damaged to repair

If a CDL is fitted with the proper linkage you must push the lever to the left to lock the diff no matter if it's in high or low, see this video from 2.20
