Could be as simple as glow plugs. Mine does it as well as does my mates 90. Wouldnt worry too much, yet...
a compression test on the first 4
if you havent the opportunity to do it yourselfDefinitely on the cards. I'll update when it's done. Best at a landy specialist?

glow plugsI'd need walking through it idiot's guide style and no tools to do it either. Test through glow plugs or injectors?
glow plugs
yes until needle reaches its high point you take note of how long it cranked to reach that too, if they are all the same then all is good ,if they dont then you need to look at results ie is it just 1 that differs then that could show bent rod in your caseKits look affordable. So set your kit up, remove fuel pump relay and crank?

or just how the gauge reads , its the comparison that matters not actual pressuresIf all four low, worn engine and so on?
Would I see rough running all the time with a bent conrod or is it taken up by heat and ECU?

low compression faults are eased by heat as its compression thats needed to create the heat to burn the fuel correctly, obviously the amount of bend matters a little rough and smoke starting ,a lot poor running
id think so as long as your aware, it might be just pump or electrical but considering the issues youve had its worth testingOk cheers James. I'll order a compression kit then on payday, be good to have one and know how to use it.
One more question then (for now )
Given I've got good starting, just won't rev for half a minute, and it runs really well when warm - am I safe to tow a 1.5ton caravan 50miles if I drive with....mechanical sympathy?

hey buddy me ok.So...
Exhaust all on no probs. Flexi on original was all split anyway so worth doing.
But I've got a little issue. On cold start up, it starts at a flick of the key but runs slightly lumpy, not too bad but also will not rev at all until a bit of heat in the engine. About 20secs before it will rev with a blip on the throttle. White smoke as well......all clears when warm and revving freely, it's running really well to be fair.
There's literally hundreds of threads detailing these symptoms so I'm not going to start another 1!
Possible causes range from fuel filter thru fuel pump all the way to bent conrod
Cracked head? Faulty injector? Sump levels ok and no smell of diesel on dipstick...
Fuel pump sounds strong, it's quieter than ever after doing seals. I've unplugged the MAF ready for starting in the morning but Im not holding my breath.
Main concern is I've bent a rod during my misadventures with the injector seals. Yet it never ran for long at all when it was knocking on both occasions.
I'm going to change the oil again the weekend and change all filters as I only changed main oil filter after diesel in sump so hopefully new fuel filter will sort it.
I'm not throwing parts at it until it goes away, if the new fuel filter doesn't help I might just get a compression test.
@jamesmartin it's your time to shine....
@KISSMYAURA you alright pal? You've been quiet lol
hey buddy me ok.
My 13/5yr weimeraner been in the wars, has a monster lump removed from her toe today, shes too old to go under a genral so they did it with a local, and used a welder...... YES a WELDER!
Fixed a A4 metal plate to her belly lashed it on with crepe bandage connected wire, the other end is a box with two foot pedals, and what looked like a soldering iron with a thick needle cut the lump out, weirdest hing i have ever seen. Sparks and everything, Its called Diathermy, cuts and seals at same time, not a laser works just like a welder.
Poor thing was backed into in a corner with me and two nurses holding her in a WWF headlock. She was fine all done now and when i got home she sprang outta the truck and tucked into some food, been starving her in case they had to put her under. So been busy with her and the pupsta.
PS i used locktight high temp silicone bright orange for all things exhaust, air tight, and flexible much better than that crappy paste!
if she sweet when warm, no noises other than you used to then she should be just fine,Bloody hell she ok now? Not malignant lump was it?
I used crappy paste lol it's sealed so far. Not sure if middle box is going back on once I've determined how ****ed the situation is. Tad loud
I've bottled driving it until I know if it's bent rod or not and certainly feel it'd be daft to tow a big caravan with it. I'd be asking for a piston through the block if rod is bent surely? Saying that I've borrowed my stepdads 06 x trail and it feels like a right shed. Brake pedal spongy, knock on o/s/f and smokes under heavy load.....
Reckon landy would hold it together for me?
if she sweet when warm, no noises other than you used to then she should be just fine,
chances are they always have a brain fart when you mess with injectors, (you checked the fuel press reg, might have got upset but my bet is ecu fuel map if all good when warmed up)besides caravan don weigh nuffin! just make sure the caravn breaks / spring is well lubed so it frees off ok, pumup up the tyres to a smegger over what they should be then u be free-wheelin all the way home
