I agree 101% Keith, if I was in the position I'd rent and swap over every two or three years. For me the 38' is enough of a 4x4 and family cruiser, camper, van and tow truck.
The modern cars are amazing but not on my income :)
Even if I could rent. I wouldn't want gizmo filled modern vehicle.
 
many thks , alas its just making that decision on what will be a good replacement for my D3 , good call regarding the emergency fund , have a sort of one for my D3 , indeed know what u mean , they can become money pits like a D3 , would really like a FFRR but many are group 49-50 , spoken to my insurance is great detail and they say that some companies require a tracker to be fitted , don’t know how much it brings the polices down by having a tracker

decision wise it’s just me as I’m a widower, good call ref service record , indeed always ask for things like that including how many previous owners , suppose the reason I’m heading towards a RRS is it’s so similar to my current D3 and know them extremely well

Plus the next couple of years I intend to move so maybe the area will be cheaper than where I’m currently at

oh wow, I bet that’s incredibly nice to drive , must confess the D3 is my first vehicle to have air suspension and that’s very comfortable, so imagine ur Bentley is whisper quiet down the motorways

know what u mean ref RRS being chavvy , however with all the daft body kits and low profile tyre removed they don’t look too bad, in black , rock sliders , must confess never thought I would ever consider one but there isn’t really too much out there as a replacement , 5 x litre D4 would be very nice but seeing there jap imports range around 35k , so that’s out

hopefully the current diagnostics will also be adaptable , have a gap iid, carly , Autel Ap200 ,

unless of course there’s the Volvo XC90 , don’t like BMW’s ,

Even if I had the cash, I would not buy any of the modern stuff, despite spending over 50 years in electronics, I don't want a mobile fecking Xbox with glowing screens and unreliable electronics. I don't want thief's delight keyless entry, I'm still able to open a tailgate without motor assistance etc etc. I want a car, a means of transport that is reliable and reasonably economical, I am not alone, second hand pre gizmo car sales are booming.
A mobility scooter then for yer!! LOL

bless u and honestly mate am very grateful , at the end of the day only really got good insight from owning previous landies , ie , series 2A , 3, freelander and lastly the D3

a while back even looked at an old style defender that had an automatic gearbox conversion but alas with my back its no longer viable , as to be honest that would have been ideal , of course though prices are seriously going up , saw a few pics where they had been resprayed but then underneath had more plates on the chassis than the seventh bridge ,:eek: criminal as newbies that don’t know what to look for will be buying some serious death traps , possibly ending up buying a new chassis

hopefully if I buy a petrol V8 RRS instead of a diesel I won’t get any stick, lmao

this is the kind of interior , specs I would like to get , do prefer the newer shaped RRS , alas though I think the 8 x speed and newer styled body will be out my price range ,however prefer the rotary on the terrain response section of the older design, last pic is the facelift pre 8 x speed but still old body shape

That's why I sold mine, as every time I drove it, I wasn't sure the crankshaft would make it to the end of the journey. :eek:

indeed and think it takes the shine off so to speak by having that in the back of ur mind , it’s one of the other reason why I wish to go over to a petrol,

+1 here. P38 electrics are fairly easy compared to modern stuff. Also they seem to reduce the space in the engine bay which makes even basic maintenance a challenge.

plus 1000% regarding access within the engine bay , replaced the turbo air inlet pipe , plus some other hoses and clips on my D3 and don’t mind admitting was one of the toughest jobs I’ve ever had to do because the lack of access , trying to get onto 3 x simple nuts and bolts I had to go through a multitude of different sockets, spanners , UJ sockets , u name it I tried them , in the end used one of these which were invaluable

even after 5 x months I’ve still not been able to get everything back together because of the restricted access and every time I try rip the living daylights out my back , apologises I’m waffling as per usual, lol

pic of these crow foot UJ’s , extremely useful for those hard to access nuts/bolts

may i ask is that a RRS sport , if so is it the L494 plse , must admit I wouldn’t be able to stretch to that , see the earlier ones u can have the 3.6 TDV8 or the petrol 4.4 V8;, alas don’t know what the 3.6 is like , but would go for a petrol anyway , either a 4,4 or later 5 litre that comes with a 8 x speed box , also really need to see if values start to fall because of the fuel situation

The newer the model you can afford the better i say. Those big ugly gear sticks just look stupid IMHOP and dated now. The fresher looking interiors are far better and it makes you also feel like your driving a much newer model too.

must confess never had a vehicle with the rotary gear selectors, like everything assume it’s just a case of getting useto them , would really like the 8 x speed box

At one time even looked at a FL2 but being spoilt from the comfort of air suspension don’t want to go back , is perfect allowing me to lower it which really helps getting in/out of the vehicle

Always like to sit down beforehand crunching the numbers in what I can realistically afford , currently know the FFRR won’t be feasible , mainly due to insurance , would feel a lot more comfortable with a RRS seeing they share so much with the D3 , think the only differences will of course be the engine , TFT instrument panel, hydraulic anti roll bar system , will also have to ensure I put some emergency money aside, also been looking into warranties , but many are not worth the paper there written on due to so many exclusions in the small print

Will wait for a good few months to see how the market is and if the V8’s start to drop in price

Plus 1 and talking of disco sports didn’t realise they had coil suspension, don’t know what kind of terrain response systems they have

also wonder how these systems compare in other vehicles like the land cruiser, Volvo, Lexus, Toyota etc

really like the Jaguar F pace, think that has the same system as the discoveries

Sadly the prices of the newer stuff models is not going to drop anytime soon because there is actually a surge in demand for them at the moment across the entire model range and this is due to lots still being stolen ( Manchester area currently ) and a world wide shortage of computor chips my dealer specialist informed me so sellers and dealers can sort of hold out for now and get more money albeit only on the absolute peach examples. My L405 i recently sold to a prestige dealer of Rolls Royces and Bentley's is now up on his website for sale and who ever buys it will be getting a absolute concours example in every way BUT you'll have to pay £42000 for the V5c albeit worth every single penny because she is like a brand new car and she did cost £115000 new with all her extras. So if you can find those sort of funds then go for it as you wont find another one like her. She is still on my private plate which is negotiable with the dealer otherwise upon sale he will revert her back to her age related number. There is ALWAYS a deal to be done i say. LOL
