Just joined the forum and must say brilliant thread, but despite the warnings have just acquired L322 with gas myself replacing Mercedes ML. Considered the annual cost but then figured my mate has just been offered £17K for his year old £29K poxy 3 series against new 5 series so figured I can run the RR for a year then throw it away and it will still have cost me less than his annual depreciation bill. Well that's how I justified to myself anyway.

I wouldn't call any of the BMWs I've owned in the past pony but the point about depreciation is a very valid one. In the case of my own P38 I think it's effectively finished depreciating, and will always have a certain value assuming its functional. Bangernomics principles in full effect! :)

Point is I honestly believe my p38 is cheap to run prior to this which I acquired for 5k 9 years ago I had an xjr which I bought new for 72k and sold 3 yrs later for 27k and still use this p38 as the main 4 door family wagon do about 8k per annum and in 9 years spent 2k on gassing it 3k on new engines I did all the bushes and shocks just after getting it and now it costs a bit of time and a few quid each year for cheap motoring dont kbnow why more people dont have one ;)

Yes, my P38 hasn't need much doing pretty good really for an old car, my previous XJR and XJ8 were faultless - absolutely nothing went wrong with them despite regular good thrashings!
 
this is a great debate/conversation.
Today I drove the NEW RR. A 3.0D with a list price of around £80k.
it does look lovely.

but.

my advise? go and get a really nice V8 petrol L322 so long as you don't do much miles.
this 3.0 D averaged just over 20mpg. i'm getting 18mpg (local runs average).
 
Agreed - I can't see the point of buying a supposedly luxury car and then plumping for a vibey noisy diesel. If you're buying as a utility vehicle then fine. But I like smooth quiet engines which are only heard when you're playing silly buggers.

I can't hear the engine in my P38 except at idle, certainly quieter on the move than the V8.

Fyi, i get my tyres at a second hand outfit run by Iraqi's, 30 quid for a pirelli all season with 6mm, just look away when it slips off the trolley jack that's lost its swivel cup. :eek:

Its a risk i know but i do get a chance to check them for land mine damage first, plus i've got airbags, pretensioners, and very sturdy pants.

When my Dad died , we discovered hand written* log books not only for his car but also the trucks he'd driven. They went back to the first day he started driving HGV in the 70s. He not only had fuel but also had each pick up and drop off location and what it was he was carrying. Which all seemed a bit odd, considering all that was already logged in the business accounts!

My dad also did this, which was strange as he was a Butcher (we thought) so what was he doing trucking? :confused:
 
I have to say Ant, either I have the luck of the Irish (so far) or you've been unlucky. I'm not so precise about mpg and it's cost, as it was one of the things that I decided not to worry about the moment I decided to get a 4x4 BUT so far in 2yrs and 11 months I have laid out :

EAS calibration £25 (local chappy who is a magician, with all things electrical but you don't really want near cream leather :eek: )

Fuel pump, supplied and fitted under £150 ( I didn't get a receipt for labour ;) )

Gearbox oil change inc Filtr kit £75.08
7l oil £35 (yes it was the right stuff, I have a permanent discount with the local Motor Factors :D )
labour £0 ( Did most of the work, with my local indy's help)
total £110.08

New metal brake pipes £150

2x front ride height sensors £176.65

1 x tyre £50 (again it pays to know the owner of the place :p )

total to date parts and labour £661.73


Fuel for those who want to go into it is approx 3 - 4k mpy @ 25.5mpg average

Fingers crossed that she continues to look after me this well and even if she throws a wobbly I will have done quite well until now :)

Lpg?? who cares? Towbar £140 Towbar electrics £230( ouch) Road tax £150. Can i just say, we really should keep this info hush hush, how are we expected to sell our vehicles to the unsuspecting ????;)
All from memory, i don't keep logs unless i can burn them:p

Compared to some I suppose it's reasonable. However as you've quoted mine for comparison, you've paid more in 9 months than I have in 3yrs. ;)

In my own opinion I don't skimp on tyres, I buy the best I can, at the end of the day they are the only thing that actually attach the vehicle to the road, the only contact point (hopefully) so I like to know when my family is in the car that it's connected well, that it will stop when I want it to, corner how I want it to and react in sun/rain/snow/mud as I want it to

I have to agree with this, i bought my l322 with around 3mm tread on & was planning on running them in, had a sidewall puncture (which the RAC guy bodged up to get us home) i was flicking through all the cheap brands & couldn't justify it. my 20 year old girlfriend is the only driver among us & i shelled out £1,200 on 4 continental sport contact's. it hurt my wallet immensely but i'd do it again. you can't put a price on safety. only recently a deer jumped out @ 50mph, the car came to a stop a long time before hitting the deer (this isn't very much time at all) i'm not so sure had i bought "nexens" or "yangpings" or "pingpongs" that the same result would've been achieved.

Never trust a tyre JUST because its expensive and high end,
They all do a pretty good job, but you pays your money and makes your choice,
I had pirelli's on a Bmw 320 in my teens, and i regulary went a funny pale colour, totally dangerous in the wet..

And i had cheapo's on a Volvo GLT( dont ask ) and they were astonishingly brilliant...

Look at the EU tyre ratings, Nexens come out better than many top brands.
 
+1 nexens are premium quality tyres at mid-range prices. Had em on all sorts of cars from 150 bhp to 400 - never had a problem and I don't hang around on the twisties.
