Overheating gearboxes is the biggest cause of failure according to Ashcrofts and slippage is the cause of heat. That is why I have fitted a thermocouple at their recommendation. Torque is still less than the 4.6 even with my chipped diesel.

James, ask me in 10 years how is my gearbox doing.:)

I'm not James and it hasn't been ten years quite yet.
So how is your gearbox doing?

I'm quite interested in this gearbox swap especially now that Ashcroft has a conversion kit to fit the petrol converter housing to M51 and M57 diesel engines.
I realize the OP hasn't done any posts since 2013 but maybe others has done the same conversion and has feedback to give.

Cheers

A few have swapped in the 065. @ovalandrover is the first to spring to mind.

Chipping or adding a powerbox to the diesel is always going to strain that HP22 box.

I hope to be replacing the HP22 with an HP24 in my diesel soon, I hope to pick up a promised HP24 in September.
There is no point in changing the bell housing to the petrol version IMO, the standard torque convertor is OK or you can fit an uprated one from Ashcrofts that fits the standard diesel bell housing.

Why not? Are you referring to a standard engine or tuned?

Hp22 is made of cheese not metal. R380 is the way to go, will take anything you throw at it.

Unless you can't drive a manual due health issues. Given my MD - that third pedal stops me driving! And, if the R380 is so good, why is SWMBO's about to let the smoke out ? ....... And ..... you'll like this, not a lot, but you'll like it :p - be replaced by a '24 :p:p:p:p:p

;) ..... :p:p:p:p:p :D

The HP22 is fine, it's just marginal on the diesel, LR being tight fisted again. The R380 is a manual box, no fun in traffic.

Agreed - '22 is fine - the 24 is better.
