Received my X-eng disc hand brake today :)

Hopefully get chance to fit it in the next week or so, looks a good, simple bit of kit :)

I've had one for about 3 years, great bit of kit. It does go through the pads though, keep an eye on them.

Really? I wouldn't have thought they'd have got used at all as it is only ever used in a static position, thanks, i'll keep an eye on them

seen and wondered are they really that much better than a large drum brake as pad contact area is so much smaller.

seen mixed reviews, would i notice much difference as the old girls manily on road use?

are you doing some pics to show the kit with a before and after fitted shot.

cheers

i'd love to see a photo of it fitted.
Not sure if its justifiable for everyday use, but i understand they're good if you're in water and off road a lot.

Yes, i'll do a photo fit guide as i do it for you guys! If the weather is good and my back is a bit better I'll do it on Sunday :)

Made a start today...

undoing the drive flange nut was a slight pain, but, i found using some uni strut bolted to it and braced on the ground did the trick

The X-Eng instructions then say dismantle the flange and repalce the bolts with metric ones... well... after a lot of trying i ended up taking the grinder to the "mudshield" and have ordered a new one (£0.59) so got to wait for that to arrive before i can continue.

The instructions also say "a small amount of oil will come out of the back when you remove the flange, this is normal and if it doesn't you have no oil in your g/b"

When they say a little oil...

it filled my container, over flowed and flooded the driveway with g/b oil! :/

Anyway, more to follow when the new parts arrive

I've also started re-wiring and upgrading all lights to led units!

Time to replace output seal on transfer box I think.
Getting plate off is the hardest bit, rest of the fitting is easy.

They work brilliantly, even when caked in mud, far better than original drum

Bet your gearbox oil is empty and all the oil is /was in the transfer box!
Just fitted the x brake to my 90 kin brilliant, very pleased.

Your gearbox may be suffering like mine. The oil migrates from main box to transfer box, I can't be arsed to pull it and change seals. I just do the levels every 6/8 weeks depending on how much it is used.

ahh, thanks, hadn't thought it could be a sign of other problems. Hadn't really wanted to do more g/b / transfer box work, but, guess that's the next job...

Nope its on the shaft that leaves the main box, that the tfer output seal, on the s2 forum theres a recent thread where they think the gbox breather is getting blocked and forcing the oil into the tfer box, one guy was going to do an experiment with some extra drillings on the selectors.
What I will say is on my s2 with tdi fitted, I drilled and tapped the round tin bit on top of the gearbox and linked it into the rest of the raised breather pipes and have never had any issues with oil migration.
But I do run 85/140 which may help, seriously good oil for series boxes that could have a hard time.

how did you manage the "swarf in g/b issue" when drilling?

what seal do i need then (by part number so i can find it on the parts diagram!)

and realised my swarf question was stupid... you just removed the tin bit to drill it!

Im not sure on s3 parts, but as a start s2 seals are as follows, output flange seal 236417, gearbox mainshaft rear seal 236305.
