Right I am trying to get my mums computer on the internet. This is a problem because she lives 4 houses away. i can take my laptop 2 houses away and then lose the signal. So I have been looking on Ebay for networking antennas and found some which have a 19db gain but are these only for recieve. I am looking for getting one for my netgear router/modem to put on the outside of the house. i dont want to have to spend silly money so have any of you TEC heads got any ideas.

She dont want to go get BB on her phone because she wont use it enough to warrant paying.

A network cable is out of the question......

So come on do you lot know any good ariels or fixes....

I can sort out wireless no problems its just the signal is lost 2 houses down the road so its like the CBs used to be.....need to improve or boost the signal but there has to be someone out there which has a idea how to do this easy....

There are several basic rules that you should know when working with antennas, RF power, and expected signal strength. The “3 dB” rule is perhaps the most important rule when dealing with RF (signal) power. It states that for every 3 dB increase in level, the power is doubled. For every 3 dB decrease, the power is cut in half. Similarly, every 10 dB increase in level is 10 times the power, and every 10 dB decrease in level results in 1/10 the power. This is sometimes referred to as the “rule of 3s and 10s.

now your standard router will only be bumping out 2-3dB so the 19dB one "should" reach the extra 2 houses unless someone has a lead wall somewhere along the way. in theory if your 3db reaches 2 houses, you would only need an extra 3 to reach your mums.

and it doesnt matter if its only for the recieve end. get it set up at your mums computer to recieve your further away signal (this will also help security). the ones on ebay though do say you can attache directly to your router/modem as a replacement arieal.

cappish?

well i asked on ebay one of the ppl selling the 19db one and he said its only for the recieving comp.....strange if ya ask me. Well when I walk down the street I am away from the houses and my mums house is directly inline with 2 houses if you understand that.....the signal has to go through 2 houses lots of walls...... I did try a directional Edimax Indoor Desktop 2.4GHz Directional Antenna - Wireless Accessories - CCL Computers

but at my mums there was nothing signal wise...... i did put the usb dongle out the window but still nothing...........

so your saying your mums house is on the same side of the road as yours?

is there anyway of connecting some co-ax cable to the router/modem and running up onto your roof with an aireal on the end? might go "over" the 4 houses :D

i dunno

eBay.co.uk: Wireless Network Omni Directional Antenna 6dBi Booster (item 230063348789 end time 19-Dec-06 19:30:00 GMT)

This antenna solves the common problem of poor signal coverage with wireless networks, by attaching directly to the connector of your Wireless Access Point or Wireless Network Adaptor. Simply detach your existing antenna and replace it with this, or plug the antenna into an aerial port on your wireless router/acess point. An essential piece of equipment for anyone trying to set up a reliable wireless network or trying to increase the range of an existing network.

thats what it says anyway.
