Wipers stopped working

Update, took motor apart as per you tube to find one of copper contacts worn away, common problem. Noticed it was second hand aswell. Hammered some 1.5m wire flat, soldered to remaining bit of contact, refitted and bingo, wipers working again. Nothing to do with landies but hey ho.

Check your lubrication. If it's the typical white grease that Land Rover use, it can turn to the consistency of wax in v.cold conditions. I'm talking about the lubrication that allows the drive cable to move inside the plastic (Bowden cable) tubing. I fixed mine by spraying a thinner lube (e.g. WD-40) into the tube with the straw nozzle. You may have to cut a hole into the tube for acces using a Stanley knife and then tape it closed with electrical insulation tape.

If wipers pack up on a journey, polish the windscreen class with laundry fabric softener. This contains high concentration of surfactants, which is the stuff used in those windscreen water repellents, and will give you visibility without wipers as the raindrops are repelled from the glass and blow away in the airflow. A good emergency standby is to carry a small bottle of fabric softener in the cab. WARNING - *not suitable* for the flat windscreen on a Defender -- only use on curved windscreen glass!

Good-luck,
Rick

My wipers failed just as I joined the M1 at Leicester last week in a downpour; they occasionally, came back for one stroke and packed up again. 60 miles squinting like a Japanese fighter pilot until I came off at Dunstable. Pulled into Servs to check fuses and wiggle cables etc, nothing. Just wish I'd seen the above about wiping the screen with Comfort.
