I know there are lots of complaints about defender wipers and I have looked through the forum but just want to confirm few things before buying bits...

My wipers go one speed only - up one click and they go - but you have to time them stopping or they will just stop wherever they are.

Up 2 clicks and nothing - dead.

Down one click and they go but you cant even time the stop they always stop in middle of screen.

Is this the motor or not - read some people saying its the motor that needs renewing and some saying no - motor is fine - its something else.

So is it actually the motor and/or wiper stalk or something else?

If any of you guys could just help me confirm this I would appreciate it.

What model is it?
Try the park switch on the motor
I'd take a look at your column switch contacts and get a multi meter at it
If the wipers seem slow check the wiper spindles aren't seizing too (bits where the arms fit on)
There's a bad batch of tdci's that end up failing, you would suspect the park switch but it's the bit in the motor that breaks and fails to contact the park switch plunger

Mine wouldn't park, that turned out to be the park switch (surprisingly), and the intermittent was very random, fixed that with a new relay. Then to get the switch working as expected I had to replace the wiper switch on the column. It mostly works now, but the very fast doesn't work. No idea on that one!

Did this job couple weeks back after failing MOT. The fast speed not working was down to the motor and the intermittent down to the switch. Fitted brand new genuine motor and switch which cost £60, easy to fit and working like new now.

You can check if its the motor or switch by accessing the motor, pulling the block connector off it to expose the terminals and wiring it direct from the battery. The park bit can be examined by prising open the plastic connector block on the outside of the motor - there is a cam on the motor drive ring that pushes in a plunger, this makes/breaks a connection in that block. Will make sense when you see it.
