Wiper problem is now sending me insane!

Spot on BD - Haynes is less than Helpful on the relays side.

It's even adament there are relays and fuses under the drivers seat - not on my 90 there aren't, unless they rusted away and fell off:D

One of my 'get round it it' jobs is to work out what each relay does by trial and error, as a search on both LZ and Google hasn't thrown up the answer!

What truck you got?

Can probably work it out from wire colours

1994 90 300 Tdi

Good idea - between wiring diagram, wire colours and listening/feeling for 'clicks' I should arrive at the definitive guide!

Maybe if it's raining this weekend....

The Haynes I've got is for 1983 - 1995
Makes no mention of under seat fuses so makes me wonder which manual you have.

This says
" The majority of relays are mounted onto the rear of the fusbox, the exceptions to this are the heated rear window relay, the voltage switching relay and the low fuel relay, which are located behind the instrument panel ( see illustrations ( snigger :D)). On models with twin fuel tanks, the fuel tank and pump changeover relays are located on the right hand side of the engine compartment, as is the split charging facility relay (where fitted).

Many thanks for that

My manual covers all Defender models - including the Td5 so can be really confusing.

Think i'll have a search around for an earlier manual covering just the 200 and 300 Tdi - might be more helpful!

I won't get my hopes up too much, as sounds like the pictures aren't much better;)

Hi guys ... not sure what the three relays at the bottom of the fusebox are but one of them is a starter relay! I looked for one on ebay and immediately identified it as the big red one in the fusebox. SH I know the one relays behind the dash that you have found as I also stumbled across them too but not sure what they are. One big yellow one and a smaller green one. BD, thanks for the offer and by all means feel free to call in after 6 when I'll be with my work colleague in the car park for more tests. I'm on the Saxon Business Park - Hanbury Road.
Will be keeping you informed with progress tonight. :):)

Sure hope so BD ... well I guess we could catch up for a little Landy banter one lunch time during the summer. I'm sure I recognise your motor, obviously not going to mention road names but between motorway junctions and usually parked in reverse on the drive?
Catch you soon fella. :)

 I knew I should have gone for a camo paint job  :D

Talking of which I'm sure we've passed a couple of times up towards morrisons

Could well have done fella, I do get lunch from there occasionally and a few litres of diesel when I've saved up :D Usually come to work in the little A-class as I do a fair bit of business mileage but I prefer to use the Landy when I can.
Maybe see you at the checkouts ... I'll be the one buying lots of hand wash and latex gloves :D

Ok, Ok, ... I guess you want to know what the fault was so here goes ... it's really bizarre though
After spending an hour with the test gear and the Landy dash in bits we couldn't work out whether it was a faulty wiper stalk or the wiper delay relay or a connection in the dash between the two. We then found some odd goings on resistance wise on the black/green wires on the switch which also has an earth from it. This connection goes into the stalk itself so we couldn't remove it but it was obvious it was the connection for the push washer bottle pump activation.
On the washer bottle there are two connections, one rear and one front wash. We disconnected the front connection and guess what? ... Fault disappeared. Reconnected, fault returned. These two connections go into a multi-plug behind the washer bottle where the separate earths become one. The break in the earth is between here and the wiper stalk. The fix ... simply fix an earth wire from the earth on the connector behind the washer bottle and attaching it to a decent earth. I used the metal washer bottle bracket.
So, a really whacky fault that would have taken forever to find that ended up having a very simple fix.
Happy days and big thanks for everyones input ... I hope it helps others who can't find the answer. :D:D

Thanks guys ... just a quick tip if you ever come across this problem ... I used the washer bottle bracket to earth to first of all but it's not good enough. I ran a cable from the earth on the washer bottle three way plug to the bulkhead earth instead and that is spot on :):)
Onto the next jobs then ... steering drop arm and both track rod ends. At least there's no electrics involved :p
