Wiper problem is now sending me insane!

Right I've had another look tonight and found the following:
I took the headlight connector block off and examined it. The earth side of the block had melted slightly on the outside. The connections themselves looked ok but you never know. I tried the flash, main beam and headlights while it was off and the wipers were fine so, definately coming from the left hand side. I also tried the indicator with the headlight disconnected but the wipers still came on. Not sure if they earth in some way through the headlight earth and thus came on for that reason.
So, other than a new headlight connector block I'm not sure what else I can look at.
If this triggers any more ideas from you guys fire away :)
Many thanks.

There is an earth on the inner wing near the front at the top where it bolts to the outer wing have you unbolted this and cleaned it up? Trace the earths from the headlight and indicators, through connectors, until you come to their ends. I'm sure Buster had a piccie somewhere, I'll try and find it for ya.

Thanks Gratch ... already taken this earth off and made a new one up on the washer bottle bracket. All nice and tight and copper greased but no improvement.
Thanks for the idea though.

This un Andy?

That's the one Gratch ... yeah I've re-routed this one and had no improvement. Think I'll remove the light and have a look from the front rather than the top and see if anything else shows up.
Ta for your help.

Is it still there Andy?

Hi BH, yes still there. I'm going to remove the headlight next and gather all the earth wires, including the ones I've relocated and re-fix to the inner wing after a good wire brush and copper greasing. From this point I'm going to also fit an earth strap down to the chassis and also fit a new headlight connector. If that doesn't fix it I'm going to stand back and just laugh at it!

Latest update on this is that I removed the headlight last night in the 30 mins spare I had and re-fitted the old earth to where it was originally but with lots of wire brushing and copper grease. Having put it all back it now seems to have cured the indicate left/wipers sweep problem but the flash/main beam is still the same. As I said in an earlier post the earth section on the headlight connector looks in bad shape so a new one should be with me later today. Hoping this will then solve the mystery!

Hi Andy - sounds like you're getting there

11/10 for perseverance!

Just goes to show that earths are the route of all problems!!!

Too right Martin ... not all that sure what I did to fix the wiper/left indicator issue but I'm really really hoping the damaged headlight connector (earth side) is the cause of the other. New connector arrived today so will fit tomorrow and let you know. Hope the Yorkshire trip went well :)

I remember it well - still have the nightmares.

Good luck Andy.

Right guys ... I think I've sorted it. Not done a full road test yet and it was intermittent but it always wiped when I turned the lights on and it doesn't now :)
The earth on the headlight connector was badly damaged and not giving a good connection. This along with a couple of fractures in the other two cables where the previous had used the dreaded 'scotchlocks' to tap into the lighting circuit! I've now bought a switch to re-wire these properly.
Many thanks to all that helped with this and I hope it helps others who might otherwise go insane! :p

Like I said I'm still to do a full roadtest but the future looks promising. :D:D

So here is the culprit ... being as the lights worked as they should I didn't think to look at this and only spotted it as it came off when I was removing a scotchlock that was still on there. You can see two fractures on the wires, one scotchlock had been removed in the past and the wire left as it is here.
Don't know what caused the earth connection to melt but it's ok now :)
Heyt ho, onwards and upwards, hope the next job doesn't take months to sort! :p

Look don't laugh but when I was out with the dog tonight I switched the lights on and the wipers came on too and pretty much stayed on! I nearly put the Landy in the ditch in shock and despair. Walked the dog in a very bad mood, got back in the Landy and it didn't do it once all the way home until I indicated left to turn onto the drive.
I've had enough now, time to let someone else have a look!:doh:
