I'm not a fan of winches, prefering me Tirfor for occasional recovery. However, on a fairly regular basis, I need to drag small / medium sized felled trees out of the woods, usually up a slope. So, I'm therefore thinking about getting one. I have no intention of installing a split-charge system. Instead I'm going to wire the winch to two 110Ah leisure batteries mounted in the tub and re-charge them from the mains after each use. They will therefore be entirely separate from the vehicle's electrical system.
I could wire the batteries in parallel and use a 12V winch or wire them in series and use a 24V winch.
My instincts tell me that a 24V one would be a better bet, due to it's lower current draw making it more reliable.
What do others think?
