Why won't the clutch bleed

so I've replaced the master, slave and flexi hoses on my 200tdi defender 90. All went well.

Problem is I can't get it to bleed through....

I've filled the reservoir put a tube on the end of the slave bleed nipple but no amount of peddle pumping shifts and fluid.

Am I doing something wrong?

You'll need an assistant for this, open the bleed valve and get your assistant to press the clutch pedal and hold it down, close the nipple and release the pedal, repeat until fluid comes through, about half a dozen repeats should do it.

I had this on my defender 90 it all worked fine but I removed the flexi to weld on a new outrigger and the clutch wouldn't bleed.
Something in the master cylinder had worn. New master cylinder was ordered and it worked fine.

undo the pipe at master cylinder and use your finger as a valve over out let until fluid flows, then fit pipe and leave slack whilst pedals pressed ,then tighten before letting pedal up once its started sucking fluid from res it will bleed normally

Nice one thanks. That makes sense I took the outlet pipe of and pumped the peddle but nothing came out. Was starting to think the new master cylinder was nackered.

Why do you need to do this to get it to suck from the reservoir? Doesn't it just have a one way valve that opens when you let off the peddle?

Is the bleed nipple at the top?

These can be a pain

Remove the slave from gbox
Clamp it so the piston if you like can't come out
Open nipple
Try some suggestions above
When you get a solid pedal you can't push
You have a clutch pedal

commonly you find a completely empty system doesnt suck from res ,just the air back and forth, once primed fully should be ok

Maybe I'm just lucky, but I fitted my engine/gearbox back in the other day along with a new master, connected flexi up, opened bleed nipple, stuck some fluid in it and gave the peddle a pump to get it started, left it for a short while whilst doing something else, tightened nipple back up, jumped in to check and job was a good 'en..

The last clutch system bleed procedure I did was in reverse. Using some see-through tubing I attached a pump action oil can filled with clutch fluid to the open bleed nipple on the slave cylinder and pumped until the master cylinder reservoir was full. After trying the traditional method of bleeding and then the reverse method I hugely prefer the reverse method. Easier and only one person needed for the job.

Thanks everyone got it sort. James you were spot on in priming the master. Think I will reverse bleed it next time. Seems much easier!
